TUALATIN, OR – The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta has been around since 2004, and organizers say people from around the world have gathered to watch participants paddle giant hollowed-out pumpkin in a series of races on the Lake of the Commons in Tualatin.

The pumpkin races are just part of a weekend’s worth of family-friendly activities that include a giant pumpkin weigh-off, the 5K Regatta Run/Walk, and Pumpkin Regatta festival.

The giant pumpkins are supplied by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers.  They start growing them in April using special pumpkin seeds.

“The pumpkins tend to weigh between 600 and 1,200 pounds,” says Heidi Marx with Tualatin Parks and Recreation.  “They’re probably six or seven feet across, they’re pretty big.”

Members of the PGVG hollow the pumpkins on the day of the races, and they’re first to hit the water.  They’re followed by event sponsors and winners of an annual lottery held each August.

Pumpkin races take place at noon and 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 19th, Lake of the Commons, 8325 SW Nyberg St, Tualatin, OR  97062.  Admission is free.
