  • How Cowboys’ DeMarvion Overshown & Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes met over a decade ago

    Growing up in the small East Texas town of Arp, Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown has talked about how there weren’t many idols to look up to when he was a kid. On the town’s Wikipedia page, only three names show up under the “notable people” category: former University of Houston head basketball coach and Basketball Hall of Fame member Guy Lewis, oil tycoon Joe B. Foster and Overshown.

    So, when idols come around, they make an impact. For Overshown, that happened to be Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

    While he calls Arp home and has grown up there for most of his life, Overshown attended elementary school in nearby Whitehouse where Mahomes was coming up as a star quarterback for the Wildcats high school team.

    “The varsity football players would come to the elementary and see the kids,” Overshown said. “Pat was actually in high school, and there were times when he would come to the elementary.”

    Not only was he the star quarterback, he was also family of a friend. Jackson Mahomes — the younger brother of Patrick who has made a name for himself on social media — was in the same class as Overshown along with another family member.

    “His brother, Jackson, and his cousin, Emma, we were all in the same class,” he said. “I grew up with them, I know the Mahomes real well, that family real well. When I was doing combine interviews, I said it’d be a dream to play against him or play with him. I get to play against him, so it’ll be fun. East Texas going at it.”

    The two haven’t reconnected since those days when Mahomes was a preps star and Overshown was still learning his multiplication tables, but he said he is looking forward to meeting him in the backfield.

    “As far as formally sitting down and talking, we haven’t done that,” he said. “It’ll be good to hear from him during the game when I’m chasing him around.”

    As the two star players from East Texas, Overshown is excited to be on display alongside one of the NFL’s best in what could be billed as the East Texas Super Bowl, for all intents and purposes.

    “I got to [sack him], it’s mandatory,” Overshown said. “East Texas has been talking about it since the schedule popped up. It’s 903 [the cellular area code in East Texas], we’re going at it. Somebody’s got to win.”

  • George Pickens begins Chiefs week as non-participant in Cowboys practice

    The Dallas Cowboys returned to their team headquarters in Frisco on Monday after one of their biggest comeback wins in team history on Sunday over the Philadelphia Eagles, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team is “beat up a little bit” after further medical evaluations.

    With it being a short week ahead of the Thanksgiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cowboys had to return to the practice field on Monday, as they did so without four injured players. Of the group, the most notable non-participant was wide receiver George Pickens who is battling knee and calf injuries after hauling in nine receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown on Sunday.

    “Everyone is pretty sore and banged up,” Schottenheimer said. “It was a physical game. I was watching the game, and I was really excited about how we attacked and our play style.”

    Joining Pickens as non-participants on the injury report was starting left tackle Tyler Guyton (ankle), defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa (elbow) and wide receiver/kick returner KaVontae Turpin (shoulder/illness). Limited participants included defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (neck), defensive end Dante Fowler (shoulder), safety Malik Hooker (toe/thigh) and safety Donovan Wilson (neck). Full participants included cornerback DaRon Bland (wrist), defensive end James Houston (wrists/knee), fullback Hunter Luepke (hip), guard Tyler Smith (knee) and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas (calf).

    Of the listed players on the injury report, Guyton appears to be the one with the most concern going into the short week leading up to the game against the Chiefs.

    “We’ll see how he does this week,” Schottenheimer said. “It might be tough, but we’ll see. These ankle [injuries] are all different. He didn’t do anything today. He’s not going to do much tomorrow.”

    If Guyton cannot go, second-year player Nate Thomas would be in line for his second start after filling in for the injured Guyton for 36 snaps on Sunday.

    “We have complete confidence in Nate,” Schottenheimer said. “We love the upside and the way he competes. The size is real. He has real power. He’s another young, talented player.”

    Although starting defensive tackle Quinnen Williams briefly exited the game after taking a hard block to the ribs from Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, he was not listed on the week’s initial injury report.

    For the Kansas City Chiefs, Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith (ankle) did not practice and is not expected to play on Thursday. Tight end Noah Gray also did not practice, as he recovers from a concussion. Wide receivers Xavier Worthy (ankle) and Rashee Rice (hamstring) were listed as limited participants while quarterback Patrick Mahomes was a full participant with a groin injury.

  • Dallas Cowboys announce halftime performer for Thanksgiving game vs. Chiefs

    On Sunday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys announced that Grammy-nominated recording artist Post Malone will perform at halftime of the team’s Thanksgiving game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 27.

    Post Malone, born Austin Post, is a Grapevine native and has long been a fan of the Cowboys since his father was a concession worker at AT&T Stadium in the 2000s and 2010s. It will be his first appearance in the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving halftime show, although he did serve as a guest appearance for Beyoncé’s halftime show in 2024 for the Houston Texans’ Christmas Day game and performed “America the Beautiful” ahead of Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

    The concert, which benefits The Salvation Army and has helped raise millions of dollars for the charity since its inception in 1997. Notable performances have included Reba McEntire in 1997, Destiny’s Child in 2004, Luke Combs in 2021 and Dolly Parton in 2023.

    It will be Post Malone’s fifth performance at AT&T Stadium after headlining his own festival in 2019, 2021 and 2022 along with a sold-out headlining performance in May 2025.

    The announcement comes amid speculation that 14-time Grammy-winning recording artist Taylor Swift could make an appearance at the game. Her fiancé, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, has had her in attendance for a handful of games in the past, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in October that she has a suite for the game if she wants it.

    “We would have an elaborate seat for her if she should attend the game,” Jones said. “Nobody is a bigger fan of Taylor Swift than I am.”

    Post Malone has had a long-standing relationship with the Cowboys since his emergence onto the music scene in 2015. In 2023, he was part of the team’s schedule release video on social media, and he has been seen at multiple games including the team’s 2019 playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams and their win over the New York Giants in 2024.

    The halftime concert will run just under 15 minutes and will take place on the field. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CST on CBS.
