    Chick-fil-A is opening its 3,000th restaurant on Thursday in Dallas, Texas, and is celebrating by giving back.

    “Marking the 3,000th milestone is a testament to our local Owner-Operators, Team Members and Guests and their continued support of the Company,” said Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew T. Cathy in a statement on the company’s website.

    Cathy, 45, has been with the company for 16 years and is the grandson of Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy, who passed away nine years ago. He stepped into the role of CEO in November 2021, according to LinkedIn.

    Chick-fil-A plans to celebrate the feat with a plaque at the store, a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Cathy, and $150,000 donations to Feeding America, a nonprofit with a nationwide network of food banks, and Junior Achievement, which helps support students with resources for learning.

    “We are so thrilled to be celebrating together as we honor our founder, and my grandfather, S. Truett Cathy’s mission of remarkable customer service and demonstrating care to all,” Cathy added. “As we continue to expand, we still take pride in the fact that our restaurants are locally owned and operated businesses that invest in their people and their community, and Chick-fil-A RedBird is no exception.”

    The new restaurant, located in the RedBird mall, is owned and operated by Consuela Jacobs, who had previously worked as a Chick-fil-A team member, according to the statement.

    The new location is expected to bring in 110 full- and part-time jobs to the local area, per Fox Business.

    Chick-fil-A has plans to expand to Asia and Europe by 2025, according to the company’s website.

    The fast food chain’s revenue hit $6.4 billion in 2022, according to the Franchise Times, which is a 10.6% increase from its 2021 earnings of $5.8 billion.

    A 29-year-old Florida woman has filed a negligence lawsuit against Chick-fil-A, seeking at least $50,000 in damages. According to Fox 35 Orlando, Shi’terra Sharp filed the suit Thursday, alleging she ate a “black” chicken nugget from one of the restaurant locations in 2020.

    More Details Regarding The Alleged Incident

    According to the outlet, Sharp filed the lawsuit in Orange County, Florida. Sharp alleges that she purchased chicken nuggets from a Chick-fil-A in Brooksville on January 8, 2020. Then, she consumed the nuggets at her residence.

    The woman alleges that as she ate the food, she noticed the meat of the nuggets was black-colored. Additionally, she became “violently ill” and began to experience diarrhea, cramps, and nausea.

    “… Directly after consuming the chicken nuggets purchased from Defendant, Plaintiff… became violently ill, was nauseated, vomited until [she] had no strength left to do so, suffered from cramping, nausea and diarrhea,” the lawsuit reads, per Fox 35 Orlando.

    Ultimately, the suit alleges Sharp “sustained great injury” to multiple parts of her body. The injured areas reportedly include her mouth, throat, stomach, and digestive system.

    “I was as sick as a dog. I lost so much weight due to what happened,” Sharp reportedly told Daily Mail in a report published on October 20.

    According to Daily Mail, Sharp reached out to the company in 2020 following the incident. However, Chick-fil-A reportedly alleged, “there was nothing wrong with the meat.”

    Furthermore, the suit adds that Sharp has undergone “great pain and suffering for some time” and has been diagnosed with “gastrointestinal illnesses.”

    More Information Regarding The Florida Woman’s Lawsuit Against Chick-fil-A

    According to Fox 35 Orlando, Sharp is suing Chick-fil-A for alleged negligence. The woman alleges the restaurant failed to “inspect” and ensure its food was “fit for consumption.” Additionally, Sharp alleges Chick-fil-A failed to “properly supervise employees” during the food preparation process and “offered food for sale and consumption,” which was unfit.

    Sharp’s final accusation against Chick-fil-A in the suit cites that the restaurant ultimately “failed to prevent” the incident “from occurring.”

    Furthermore, the suit adds that Sharp experienced “bodily injury… pain and suffering, disability, mental anguish” and accumulated “expense of hospitalization, medical and nursing home treatment.”

    “These losses are either permanent or continuing in nature, and the Plaintiff will suffer said losses in the future, to-wit, permanently,” the lawsuit reads, per Fox 35 Orlando.

    The suit explains that Sharp seeks compensation for damages “in the excess sum” of $50,000. Additionally, the woman is reportedly seeking “costs of court and trial by jury,” along with compensation for her attorney’s fees.

    The Alleged Incident Mirrors Another Involving McDonald’s & An 8-Year-Old Child

    The effects of the alleged incident on Sharp closely mirror the effects of a similar incident allegedly involving a New Jersey child. As The Shade Room previously reported, an 8-year-old was left “traumatized” after ingesting chicken nuggets from an East Orange McDonald’s location in August.

    According to the child’s father, Derrick Wilson, the 8-year-old allegedly ingested a nugget that contained a dead mouse.

    Beloved chicken chain Chick-fil-A is settling a class action lawsuit for not delivering on delivery prices that were promised — and now customers may be entitled to some quick cash.

    Plaintiffs Eboni Brown, Tanique Clarke, Travis Johnson, Dominic Greetan, Friday Frazier, and Keisha Rabon, filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on October 3 alleging that Chick-fil-A advertised cheap delivery fees to entice customers — but was quietly marking up prices of delivered food by up to 30% in order to compensate for the money cut from the fees.

    “Plaintiffs allege that by omitting, concealing, and misrepresenting material facts about CFA’s delivery service, CFA deceives consumers into making online food purchases they otherwise would not make,” the delivery settlement reads.

    The fees affected those who ordered through the chain’s mobile app and website.

    “On delivery orders only, Chick-fil-A secretly marks up food prices for delivery orders by a hefty 25-30%,” the suit states, according to documents viewed by Insider. “In other words, the identical order of a 30-count chicken nuggets costs approximately $5-6 more when ordered for delivery than when ordered via the same mobile app for pickup, or when ordered in-store.”

    Chick-fil-A is settling for $4.4 million. Affected customers looking to claim their compensation are eligible for either a $29.95 cash payment or a $29.95 Chick-fil-A gift card. The chain must now also disclose via mobile and web that the price of menu items may increase if ordered for delivery.

    The settlement is similar to another class-action suit settled by Panda Express in August in which the chain agreed to pay $1.4 million to affected customers who allegedly were hit with a hidden 10% “service charge” when ordering delivery.

    Chick-fil-A did not immediately respond to Entrepreneur’s request for comment.

    Popeyes is now the nation’s No. 2 chicken chain, CNBC reported.

    After a decade in the No. 2 spot, KFC has been dethroned by Popeyes and now holds the bronze medal. Chick-fil-A is still No. 1.

    Popeyes, a chain owned by parent company Restaurant Brands International, went viral after launching its chicken sandwich in 2019, which set off the “chicken sandwich wars,” with customers lining up for hours at locations across the country. The trend prompted other fast-food chains such as Burger King, Wendy’s, and Sonic to add chicken sandwiches to their menus, causing occasional shortages of poultry.

    KFC, which is owned by Yum Brands, has experienced a market share decline over the past year, dropping from 16.1% to 11.3%, according to Barclays research, per CNBC. However, despite its new No. 2 title, Popeyes also saw a decrease in its market share during the same period, dropping from 15% to 11.9%. Chick-fil-A, meanwhile, expanded its market share from 38.3% to 45.5%.

    But it doesn’t look like Popeyes wants to say No. 2.

    “Game on, Chick-fil-A,” Restaurant Brands International chair Patrick Doyle said at a conference in mid-September, when prompted about its new spot as No. 2 behind Chick-fil-A.

    Last month, Popeyes said it was redesigning its kitchens with intuitive workstations and automatic batter makers, as well as improving operational efficiency after the initial frenzy around the chicken sandwich led to complaints about slow and inaccurate orders, Bloomberg reported.

    When Sami Siddiqui, Popeye’s president for the U.S. and Canada asked franchisees about “what would be possible” when consistently serving hot and perfect food. Their response was straightforward: “Well, then we’d be Chick-fil-A,” per Bloomberg.

    Chick-Fil-A will test two new restaurant concepts prioritizing digital-focused, to-go orders in a bid to offer customers a speedier ordering experience. 

    The fast-food chain will open a walk-up restaurant in New York City and a drive-thru restaurant in the Atlanta metropolitan area with features aimed at “cutting down wait-time[s],” Chick-fil-A Executive Director Khalilah Cooper said in a statement on Thursday. Digital orders have eclipsed traditional in-store orders in some of the company’s markets, where they make up more than half of all orders. Both restaurants will open in 2024.

    The Atlanta store will feature four drive-thru lanes, two of which will be dedicated to mobile order pick-ups. The lanes will run under the second story of the restaurant. But the drive-thru isn’t the only thing that will be bigger. The kitchen will be twice as large as at typical Chick-fil-A locations, which will be above the drive-thru, and orders will travel through an overhead conveyor belt connected with chutes that run down the sides, according to the company.

    Chick-fil-A’s push to offer a faster ordering experience comes as the company looks for ways to meet high consumer demand for its sandwiches, nuggets and other products. In 2022, Chick-fil-A customers spent nearly eight and a half minutes on average waiting in the drive-thru lane, more than customers at any other popular fast-food chain evaluated in a report from customer experience solution firm Intouch Insights. 

    Drive-thru wait times have slowed since before the pandemic. The time customers spent waiting in drive-thrus was 45 seconds longer on average in 2022 than it was in 2019, according to QSR and Intouch Insight’s annual Drive-Thru Report.

    Pebble ice lovers, rejoice — Starbucks is introducing the chewable nugget ice pellets in some stores this year.

    The coffee giant said it has been receiving positive feedback from customers on the different ice form, which would replace Starbucks’ current ice cubes, which are non-uniform, thin squares.

    “Customers who have tried the nugget ice in our hand-crafted iced beverages during testing had a resoundingly positive response,” Starbucks spokesperson Megan Adams told CBS News in an email. “Like many of our recent investments, this machine allows partners to focus on delivering the Starbucks Experience while hand-crafting the same delicious, high-quality iced beverages our customers have come to expect from Starbucks.”

    This change is perhaps a bigger deal than it seems, as 75% of the chain’s beverage sales were from cold drinks, it reported in an earnings call last year.

    Nugget ice is a softer, easier-to-chew type of ice. Sonic Drive-In, Chick-fil-A, Which Wich and others are known for using the ice in their drinks, and even selling it separately in bags to customers.

    There are mixed reactions to the news on Reddit, with some customers worried that the nugget ice would dilute in coffee drinks, and perhaps lead to more watery beverages when blended. But for now, Starbucks said most customers who have tried their beverages with the nugget ice pellets, so far, are fans.

    Fast-food industry drives workers to homelessness, report finds

    When it comes to low-wage jobs, not all industries are created equal. Being employed in the fast-food industry is the surest way to end up in poverty as a low-wage earner, a new study finds.

    A new study conducted in California by the nonprofit group Economic Roundtable has reinforced previous findings that the fast-food industry has a larger proportion of workers in poverty than any other. It’s a disparity driven by fast-food workers’ low wages and inability to get full-time hours. 

    The industry has served as a significant driver of homelessness in the Golden State over the past eight years, pushing up the state’s homeless population by 51%, the study found. Now, fast-food workers represent 1 in 17 of homeless people in Californina, according to the report.

    “We estimate that homelessness would have grown about one-fifth less in California if the fast-food wage floor was adequate to ensure that workers have stable housing,” the study reads.

    Low pay and underemployment in the fast-food industry aren’t only California’s problem, Audrey Taylor, a leader with fair pay advocacy group Fight for $15, told CBS MoneyWatch.

    “It’s clear that in California and across the country, our wages aren’t keeping up with the skyrocketing cost of living,” said Taylor, who makes $12 per hour at a Wendy’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “Economic Roundtable’s study in California should be a wake-up call around the country.”

    Not enough work hours for a full week’s pay

    The federal poverty level for a three-person household, the average American household size, is $24,860, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. 

    As of last year, there were an estimated 3.3 million fast-food and counter workers in the U.S. making an average hourly wage of $13.53, Bureau of Labor Statistics data show. That works out to $28,130 per year, assuming a 40-hour workweek, which many fast-food workers don’t get. 

    Though California has one of the highest minimum wages in the U.S., at $15.50 an hour, fast-food workers there often don’t work enough hours in a week to improve their living conditions, the report said. 

    California’s frontline fast-food workforce get an average of 1,340 hours of paid work per year, the study found. For someone who works year-round, that averages 26 hours a week. By comparison, all other workers in the state work an average of 1,839 hours per year.

    Low pay, high profits

    While fast-food workers struggle to make ends meet, the companies employing them are doing just fine. McDonald’s raked in $1.9 billion in profit during the fourth quarter of 2022, up from the year before, the company’s filings show. Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A recorded $18.8 billion in U.S. system sales in 2022, up nearly 13% from the year prior, The Franchise Times reported.

    However, fast-food businesses might not fare so well in the future if they don’t begin caring more about their employees, Daniel Flaming, Economic Roundtable’s president and one of the study’s authors, told CBS MoneyWatch.

    “This industry is highly profitable, but it will not be sustainable until it stops creating and perpetuating destitution and homelessness among its workers,” Flaming said.

    “Statewide, the public is paying the health care costs for 31% of frontline fast-food workers through Medi-Cal coverage, paying for food stamps for 17% of frontline workers, and paying a wide range of costs for homeless services and housing for 10,120 homeless individuals from the fast-food workforce.”

    At the same time, fast-food companies are achieving enormous profits, he said, noting that the five largest companies in the business had $12 billion in profits last year and $14.5 billion the year before. “This is not equitable for workers or sustainable for society.”

    Chick-fil-A is bringing in the bucks — and slowing down traffic.

    The chicken chain brought in $18.8 billion in U.S. sales last year, marking consistent upward growth since 2019, according to the brand’s Franchise Disclosure Document released earlier this week. But Chick-fil-A also ranked last for speed of service, according to The 2022 QSR Drive-Thru Report, with the average transaction taking 325.47 seconds (for reference, Taco Bell ranked number one at 221.99 seconds).

    But this data might be a little deceiving when looking at the number of cars serviced at the drive-thru. Chick-fil-A had the most cars, 5.45 on average, based on data examining how many vehicles were in front of survey respondents before they reached the speaker. McDonald’s came in second with 3.13. When scaling speed of service with the average number of cars in line, Chick-fil-A actually comes in first with an average of 107.41 seconds, according to the report.

    The chain also came in at No. 2 for “speed of service satisfaction,” which measures customer satisfaction versus wait time, with a rating of 93% — passed only by Arby’s at 96%.

    Still, Chick-fil-A’s popularity, particularly its drive-thrus, has caused some local communities to petition for restrictions.

    Earlier this year, the Charlotte City Council unanimously approved the motion to tear down a Chick-fil-A location and rebuild it as a two-lane drive-thru-only location in response to a petition by customers, citing long wait times and disruption to local traffic.

    In Florida, a location eliminated its drive-thru operation following a series of vehicle-related incidents in 2021. The following year, a San Diego storefront was almost declared a public nuisance due to traffic jams.

    Despite the drive-thru logistical issues, it’s still Gen Z’s favorite chain, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.

    A Chick-fil-A in Pennsylvania introduced a new policy for customers that is gaining widespread attention – no unattended children under 16 are allowed to hang out in the fast food joint. 

    The policy was posted on the Facebook page for Chick-fil-A in Royersford, Pennsylvania last week. “We contemplated long and hard before posting this, but decided it was time,” the post states, saying that many kids come to the restaurant when they’re off from school, often coming after going to a local bounce park.

    The groups of kids and teens often lead to “unacceptable behaviors” including: loud conversations that oftentimes include explicit language; mistreatment of property, including leaving trash behind, vandalizing restrooms and even stealing; disrespecting employees; and unsafe behavior like “walking through the parking lot and drive thru lanes.”

    The post says this is “not a pleasant experience” and so they will require anyone under the age of 16 to be accompanied by an adult to stay and eat in the restaurant. If they are not with an adult, they must purchase food and take it to go. 

    “To those unaccompanied children and teens that have visited us and acted appropriately, we thank you. But we also apologize,” the post reads. “Due to the numerous extreme behaviors of many of your peers, we must make a blanket rule covering anyone under the age of 16.”

    The restaurant’s management said they are not blaming parents, but can’t let kids push the boundaries at their franchise. 

    CBS News has reached out to the Royersford restaurant and a media representative for Chick-fil-A for further comment. The fast food company has thousands of locations across the U.S., operated by franchisees. 

    A restaurant in New Jersey gained attention for announcing a similar policy this year. Nettie’s House of Spaghetti, an upscale restaurant in Tinton Falls, said it would not allow kids under 10 in its dining room. 

    The restaurant posted about the new policy on social media, saying they knew it may upset people, but high noise levels, little space for high chairs and the mess kids make led them to make the decision. Their ban on kids will go into effect in March.

    Another Chick-fil-A franchisee made headlines for a different unusual policy – a three-day work week. The owner of a franchise in Kendall, Florida, said he would allow employees to work 40 hours in three days so they could have three days off. The plan, said owner Justin Lindsey, allowed employees to take more trips without taking time off. However, each shift could be 13 or 14 hours long.

    Good news for those who want to experience Chick-fil-A awesomeness without the actual chicken.

    Starting on February 13, the chicken chain will start selling its first “plant-forward entrée” — the Chick-fil-A Cauliflower Sandwich.

    The latest menu item is made with a cauliflower filet that’s marinated and breaded in Chick-fil-A seasoning, pressure cooked, topped with two dill pickle chips, and served between buttery toasted buns.

    “Cauliflower is the hero of our new sandwich, and it was inspired by our original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich,” said Leslie Neslage, director of menu and packaging at Chick-fil-A. “Guests told us they wanted to add more vegetables into their diets, and they wanted a plant-forward entrée that tasted uniquely Chick-fil-A.”

    Chick-fil-A’s first meatless sandwich will go on sale for a limited time in three markets: Denver; Charleston, and the Greensboro-Triad region in North Carolina.

    A company spokesperson told CNN that the starting price is $6.59, which could vary by market.

    Meatless food goes mainstream

    Plant-based options have infiltrated fast food restaurants for the past few years, with chains such as KFC, McDonald’s, and Taco Bell offering meatless menu items.

    Last summer, Burger King introduced a plant-based version of its Original Chicken Sandwich, replacing the chicken with Impossible Chicken Patties.

    But this is the first-ever veggie offering from Chick-fil-A.

    Why cauliflower?

    Stuart Tracy, Chick-fil-A’s principal culinary developer, said the company has been experimenting with various plant-based options for the past four years.

    “Our culinary team brainstormed and explored everything from mushrooms to chickpeas to chopped vegetables formed into patties, but we kept coming back to the cauliflower filet,” he said.

    Tracy added that many taste testers mistook the cauliflower sandwich for the original.

    “When most people think about a plant-forward sandwich, they might picture a patty molded from chopped vegetables, but this sandwich is what you could call a cauliflower steak. It’s real cauliflower,” Tracy said.

    But is it vegetarian?

    While the new Chick-fil-A Cauliflower Sandwich is “plant-forward,” it is not vegetarian.

    “This is made with cauliflower, pickles, bread, milk, and eggs. If that works for your definition of vegetarian, awesome,” Neslage told USA Today. “But it is not isolated in our kitchens. We have chicken all day, every day, and that’s not going away, so we want to be very candid and open and honest with our customers.”

    Chick-fil-A is jumping on the plant-based bandwagon.

    The Atlanta chain said Thursday that it’s testing its first plant-based entrée — a breaded cauliflower sandwich — at restaurants in Denver; Charleston, South Carolina; and the Greensboro, North Carolina, area. The test begins Feb. 13.

    “Cauliflower is the hero of our new sandwich, and it was inspired by our original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich,” Leslie Neslage, director of menu and packaging, said in a statement. “Guests told us they wanted to add more vegetables into their diets, and they wanted a plant-forward entrée that tasted uniquely Chick-fil-A.”

    Chick-fil-A said it spent four years developing the sandwich. Chefs tested making patties with mushrooms, chickpeas and chopped vegetables, but kept returning to cauliflower for its mild flavor.

    Stuart Tracy, Chick-fil-A culinary developer, said the cauliflower version “puts a delicious spin on what we’re known for.”

    Like Chick-fil-A’s signature chicken sandwich, the cauliflower steak is marinated, breaded, pressure-cooked and then served on a bun with two pickle slices. Milk and eggs are included in the preparation process, the company said.

    Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are the two biggest names in the rapidly growing area of plant-based proteins seeking to imitate the taste and texture of animal meat, but there are dozens of brands. Plant-based options in grocery stores include ground “beef,” burger patties, meatballs, sausages, “chicken” nuggets, pot pies and stir-fry kits.

    The ingredients usually include a plant-based protein, such as soy or pea, and sometimes other beans, wheat or potato.

    Perhaps best known for its hospitable employees and simplistic chicken sandwiches, Chick-fil-A was founded in 1967 in Georgia by S. Truett Cathy, whose son Dan Cathy now serves as chairman. The privately held company has grown into more than 2,800 locations across Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. 

    Chick-fil-A is a relative latecomer to the plant-based fast food scene. Burger King started selling its Impossible Whopper — featuring a plant-based burger made by Impossible Foods — in 2019. Starbucks launched an Impossible sausage sandwich in 2020. McDonald’s debuted its McPlant burger — developed with Beyond Meat — in the United Kingdom in 2021. And KFC began selling Beyond Meat nuggets last year.

    Adding a plant-based option hasn’t always fared well for restaurants. McDonald’s abandoned its vegetarian McPlant burger last year after lackluster sales. Cracker Barrel’s addition of a plant-based sausage to its menu last year sparked lively debate on social media from its customers.

    Chick-fil-A fans may dream of free food from the coveted chain, but for workers in one North Carolina-based location, it looks like free meals were all they were getting.

    The Department of Labor has slammed a Hendersonville, North Carolina Chick-fil-A with fines for paying off employees who served as drive-thru traffic directors with meal vouchers instead of traditional wages.

    The restaurant was ordered to pay back $235 each to seven employees, bringing the grand total of money owed to $1,645.

    The report says that denying the workers minimum wage is a direct violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

    Eagle-eyed social media users caught the restaurant asking for “volunteers” to come direct traffic in exchange for five free meals per shift on their Facebook page in a now-deleted post that has been screenshotted and shared to Twitter.

    “This is a volunteer-based opportunity, which means people can opt-in to volunteer if they think it’s a good fit for them,” the restaurant clarified in a screenshotted response to angry commenters claiming that it was a labor law violation. “We’ve had multiple people sign up and enjoy doing and have done it multiple times.”

    The Department of Labor report also claims that the restaurant allowed three employees under the age of 18 to operate a trash compactor, violating child labor laws that prohibit minors from performing dangerous jobs.

    “Protecting our youngest workers continues to be a top priority for the Wage and Hour Division,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock in Raleigh, North Carolina said in a Department of Labor release. “Child labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities. In addition, employers are responsible to pay workers for all of the hours worked and the payment must be made in cash or legal tender.”

    According to PayScale, Chick-fil-A employees make an average of $12.51 per hour, ranging from $8.77 to $19.44 per hour. The average pay for an employee with the company in North Carolina is $13.53.

    According to federal officials, three minor teens working at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in North Carolina operated dangerous machinery in violation of labor laws.

    A press release from the U.S. Dept. of Labor (DOL) said that the Highland Square franchisee in Henderson, N.C., will have to pay fines for letting teens operate a trash compactor, a hazardous machine for anyone under 18 to use.

    The DOL’s Wage and Hour Division also found that the franchise paid some employees in meal vouchers rather than money, violating minimum wage laws. So now the restaurant will have to issue $235 in back wages to seven employees.

    The DOL reports that this isn’t the first time in 2022 that a Chick-fil-A has faced child labor penalties. Last August, a Tampa, Florida restaurant was slapped with $12,478 in fines for allowing 17 workers between the ages of 14 and 15 to work past 7 p.m. and for more than 3 hours on school days.

    The press release quoted Richard Blaylock, the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division District Director in Raleigh, North Carolina, who said, “Child labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities. In addition, employers are responsible to pay workers for all of the hours worked and the payment must be made in cash or legal tender.”

    According to the Charlotte Observer, the same Chick-fil-A location made news in July 2022 when it posted a Facebook notice seeking volunteers to work the drive-through there for “5 free entrees per shift (1 hr) worked.” The restauant removed the post after it went viral and received numerous angry comments.

    Contacted at the time for comment by Business Insider, Chick-fil-A corporate told the Observer that it didn’t endorse asking for volunteers, and the restaurant pulled the plug on the program.

    As more businesses across America experiment with a four-day workweek, one Miami-area restaurant owner is taking the concept even further.

    Justin Lindsey, who owns a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Kendall, Florida, is allowing employees to work the equivalent of a full 40-hour week in just three days, with four days off. He hit upon the idea of an ultra-condensed and unchanging schedule this winter, when the restaurant had been open for about half a year.

    “They could plan their life around it — they could plan vacation, child care, school,” said Lindsey, 42, of employees who opted for a three-day week. “I wanted them to be able to look out six months from now and know what days they were going to work.”

    It took several weeks to bring his staff around to the idea, said Lindsey. In particular, he said workers were incredulous that they wouldn’t be “on call” on their days off and required to come in on short notice if the restaurant was shorthanded — a common practice at fast-food restaurants as well as among large retailers. 

    But months into the experiment, Lindsey said it’s working better than he could have imagined.

    “We  have a manger who’s from Scotland — he’s taken two trips back to Scotland this year and he still has PTO available,” he said, noting that another manager was able to graduate from the University of Central Florida thanks to her three-day schedule and intends to keep it while she pursues a master’s degree.

    To accommodate the shorter week, Lindsey created several “pods” of employees who would each work three extra-long shifts a week, rotating to spread out weekend shifts equally. So far, about a quarter of the restaurant’s roughly 160 employees have shifted to the three-day schedule, according to Lindsey. 

    The three-day schedule is made easier because his restaurant, like all Chick-fil-As, is closed on Sundays. That means six work days can be evenly split among two working pods. One set of employees works Monday through Wednesday, while the other works Thursday through Saturday the groups switch periodically so the burden of working Saturdays, the busiest day, is spread evenly.

    Longer days

    The tradeoff of fewer shifts, of course, is longer hours. Each shift of a three-day schedule can be a potentially grueling 13 to 14 hours. 

    “It does take a little bit of an adjustment,” Lindsey said, but added that most of the staffers working a three-day week were already working long days, so the additional stretch was manageable.  

    For his restaurant, the chief benefit is consistency, said Lindsey. Previously, there would be kinks in service because staff would be working different, overlapping shifts. 

    “For [workers] it’s great because they know what the schedule is, and for us it’s great because we can stretch the shift to cover all our peaks during the day,” he said. “In the traditional schedule, managers would come and go throughout the day. Someone would come in to open and leave at 1 p.m., someone else would come in at noon and leave at 10.”

    A Chick-fil-A corporate spokesperson said no other restaurant in the franchise has tried to implement a three-day week. But Lindsey said many other Chick-fil-A owners have expressed interest and contacted him for help implementing the scheduling policy.

    Lindsey’s novel approach could also prove useful in attracting workers. He told CBS MoneyWatch that he’s been flooded with applications since posting some open jobs. In one week, the restaurant got nearly 430 applications for the positions, which pay $15 to $17 an hour and include health benefits.

    Restaurant trade publication QSR reported that Lindsey’s location is on track to pull in $17 million in sales this year — more than double the $8 million a year average for a single location. 

    Lindsey has 12 years of restaurant experience, all of them with Chick-fil-A. (He owned a mall restaurant for 11 years before switching to the Kendall location in 2021.)  His unusual schedule is in sharp contrast with the trend in the food service world toward just-in-time scheduling, in which staff work unpredictable and irregular schedules, supposedly as a way to better accommodate the ebb and flow of business.

    “Your time doesn’t belong to me because you work for me — it’s your time,” Lindsey said. “I”ve made that mistake before. I’ve sacrificed time with my family for the business. And that’s time that is precious, that you can’t get back.”

    Lindsey said he dialogued with employees at his Miami restaurant extensively before implementing the program. Workers were also allowed to choose if they wanted to participate, he told the outlet.

    “A lot of companies talk about providing their team members with true work/life balance. At CFA Kendall we are actively doing something about that,” he wrote in an earlier LinkedIn post about the change.

    Here’s how the program works: There are now two “pods” (groups of workers) at the restaurant. Instead of people swapping throughout the day, a consistent crew takes care of the establishment and works together as a team straight through the entire day, Lindsey told QSR.

    The pods work on being the best at speed or inspections, which have become “literally perfect” since introducing the arrangement, he told the outlet.

    “We’ve been an elite restaurant,” he added.

    And the proof is in the (shift) pod. Lindsey’s Chick-fil-A location is on track to bring in $17 million in sales this year. The average annual sales volume for a Chick-fil-A location like this, that is not inside a mall or some such, in 2021 was $8.142 million.

    Chick-fil-A typically allows people to franchise one restaurant with an initial investment of $10,000, per its website.
