    To ease this hiring process, a company can recruit internally. As a result, this ensures the selected candidate is suitably qualified and fosters talent development.

    But what exactly is internal recruitment? Are there any advantages or disadvantages? Is there a specific process to follow when you recruit internally? Well, let’s answer those questions.

    What is Internal Recruitment?

    Essentially, internal hiring or internal recruitment refers to hiring existing employees to fill a vacancy over recruiting new workers from outside the company.

    In other words, you circulate information regarding openings internally instead of posting them publicly. Typically, this occurs through internal communication channels or mediums within your team or across the organization. Compared to hiring externally, it saves time, resources, and human effort.

    • As reported by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the average cost per hire was almost $4,700. According to many employers, hiring a new employee can cost three or four times the salary of the position.
    • Depending on your industry, it is likely that you should aim for an average time to hire. According to a LinkedIn study, companies in engineering and other technical fields in research and finance take the longest time to hire employees (up to 49 days). Comparatively, the sales and customer service industries have much shorter hiring times (around 33 days on average).

    Some of the most common types of internal recruiting include:

    • Promotions. One of the most popular forms of internal recruiting is promotion.
    • Transfers. Typically, a transfer involves moving to the same position at a different location or to a similar position in another department.
    • Temporary to Permanent. An intern or temporary position holder is promoted into a full-time position, similar to a promotion.
    • Employee referrals. Often overlooked by hiring managers, internal recruitment is a hiring manager’s dream. Employee referrals are an effective, cost-effective way to reach hiring managers with qualified candidates. You can attract a constant stream of employee-referred candidates if you implement a system to encourage and gamify the referral process.

    The Advantages of Internal Recruitment

    It is more efficient to hire internal candidates than to recruit externally:

    You keep your best talent.

    Whenever you promote from within your company, you send a very strong message to your team as a whole. When they learn that there’s a clear path to advancement, they’ll see that working at the company can be a career rather than just a job.

    As a result, your organization that has a clear pathway for career advancement is far more likely to retain your best talent.

    Recruiting externally involves finding candidates, evaluating them, and, if all goes well, convincing them to join your team. Suffice it to say, this takes both time and money.

    Basically, internal candidates fit the company’s culture no matter what their role is, and they’re already known to hiring managers. Plus, you know their strengths and weaknesses, as well as how they work.

    It is possible for current employees to start a new job within the same company without needing an extensive onboarding or training period. After all, it’s likely that they already know most of the policies, procedures, and expectations of your company. As they’ve been working together for some time, they may also need fewer meet-and-greets with colleagues.

    For promotions or job changes within the same team or department, hiring internally may also require less time to understand the context and content of a new role.

    According to research, external hiring costs 1.7 times more than internal hiring. When you hire from within, you usually do not need to:

    • Place ads on job boards. Your company’s internal newsletter or email are great ways to inform internal candidates about job openings. If all your employees work at the same location, you could also post job ads on a bulletin board.
    • Become a member of resume databases. If you’re looking for passive candidates, ask your managers about their team members or check your HRIS to find coworkers who might be suitable.
    • Pay for a background check. When you hire internal candidates, you may have already conducted background checks. According to their manager or employee records, you know whether they are in good standing.

    Risk reduction for performance.

    A company that hires from within has more information about the candidates they are considering. From their own files, they can view current employees’ records and performance reviews. It may be easier for businesses to contact coworkers and supervisors since they can access more reliable references.

    A job change or promotion is unlikely to affect an employee’s personality or behavior as they are already a part of the organization’s culture.

    Enhance employee engagement.

    It shows your employees that you value them and want to invest in them when you promote them from within. A good way to boost morale is to give employees opportunities for advancement or to move into similar positions.

    The Disadvantages of Internal Recruitment

    It is important to remember some things regarding internal recruitment, despite its many benefits.

    Employees and managers will become resentful.

    If an employee who was considered for a role is ultimately hired, they may feel bitter. It is also common for managers to feel uncomfortable losing good team members, and they may even obstruct the promotion or transfer of good team members.

    Working practices can stagnate if you rely too heavily on internal promotions. Rather than coming from within your company, new ideas and fresh perspectives are more likely to come from outside of it.

    New hires bring fresh eyes to the company. As a result, you’ll get fresh insights from them.

    The talent pool is reduced.

    Choosing internal recruitment reduces the number of candidates a company can choose from. Existing employees may make the best fit in some cases, but external perspectives might be better in others. The role and team may benefit from innovative skills and fresh ideas brought by a new employee. Employee complacency and stagnant company culture could also result from an overreliance on internal recruitment.

    Further, an internal candidate may not succeed in a new position. It is possible that their skills and experience will not translate effectively, and a change of position may affect their attitude or behavior at work. As opposed to an external candidate who knows the role in question, they may need additional training.

    Inflexibility in the workplace.

    A more traditional or standard culture can be promoted by hiring internally. Culture-fit employees could become stuck in routines or habits because they are too comfortable with current practices.

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and most people are anxious to go do something. So here are a few ideas for fun springtime activities that you can add to your calendar in the month of April.

    Attend Jazz Shows and Festivals

    Did you know that April sees some of the best jazz shows of the whole year? That’s because it’s JAM, or Jazz Appreciation Month. Many beloved jazz musicians, such as Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, and Ella Fitzgerald, celebrate their birthdays in April. So, it’s the perfect time to put on your favorite jazz playlist or dust off your favorite record.

    It’s also the perfect time to go out and see a live show! There will likely be tons of jazz concerts at venues near you throughout the month. Musicians, both old and new, will be giving it their all during this month. It’s also a great time to pick up an instrument and feel the rhythm yourself! You might be surprised how rewarding and enjoyable playing even just a few simple notes can be.

    Can’t find any musicians putting on a show or offering lessons in your town? Just head on down to New Orleans, one of the jazziest cities in the country. You’ll find people moving to music so prevalent and infectious — it will seem like the very buildings are singing.

    Read Poetry

    Just like jazz, poetry is an art form that allows for expression by playing with its structure. It’s fitting that, in addition to jazz, April is also National Poetry Month. Poets and artists around the world tend to release their new work to the public around this time.

    You can look for poetry readings and book signings at your local bookstores. They likely have already lined up events throughout the month. And, if they don’t, you could set up your own poetry party with your friends! Gather together and read your favorite passages from your favorite poets.     Celebrate International Children’s Book Day — April 2 and Beyond

    One of the great springtime joys of childhood is searching your world for brightly colored eggs with hidden treasure inside. And it’s one that you can fairly easily recreate for your kids. Even if you’re not religious, Easter weekend is a great time to set up an egg hunt. It’s a fun springtime activity that you can also invite your kids’ friends to join for added memory-making potential.

    And don’t worry if you don’t have any kids, religiosity, or a penchant for neon ovals. You can still set up a good old-fashioned scavenger hunt. All it takes to make a scavenger hunt is a good location, a prize, and some clever wordplay. Gather up your best friends, break them up into teams, and see who can solve your grand mystery.

    And, if you’re not in the mood to create an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine of clues, don’t fret. You and your friends can try your hands at an escape room. Escape rooms are places that make it their business to craft elaborate, immersive, and fun puzzles to solve. It’s an engaging way to spend your afternoon, especially in good company.

    Laugh During National Humor Month

    When was the last time you laughed so hard that you cried? Really — that long? It’s no secret that the winter can be rather dreary, especially in the latter months of January through March.     By the end of April, Spring will be in full swing. Trees and flowers, just recently buds and bulbs, will flourish with scents and colors. Sweet birds and fanciful insects will flutter about in a whirl of sound and life. And you’ll also hear the harsh, phlegmy achoos of many an allergic person wishing that Earth Day was over already.

    Despite how beautiful Spring can be, it’s also delicate. And as the years march on, protecting and healing the warming climate is increasingly important. So if you’ve been looking for some time to give back to the planet, April 22 is your day. It’s Earth Day, and volunteers around the world will spend their time cleaning up.

    A little digging online, and you’ll likely find groups organized in your town or city. And, even if you can’t find a group project, you can make your own. Earth Day volunteering is as simple as cleaning up trash on the side of the road. So invite some friends to put on gloves and pick up the residue of humanity. The birds will thank you with their song.

    Make A Party of It

    As social creatures, people love to share their fun with each other. So you could take any of these ideas and make a party of it!

    Have other friends who are parents with kids? Get together and do a scavenger hunt sleepover with a book-reading session to wind things down. Love jazz but can’t find any live events near you? Have people over to stream a live event or host a listening party of your own design.

    Almost every springtime activity that you can enjoy alone, you can enjoy together. And, April 3rd also just happens to be World Party Day. There’s pretty much no better excuse to have people over and celebrate something.

    One easy way to use less energy? Lower your home’s temperature when you’re not at home. But a lot of planning goes into such a big trip, so it’s better to start your plans sooner than later. Here are seven ways you can begin planning for your upcoming vacation now.

    1. Set a Budget

    Spring break can be just as expensive as it is fun. One of the biggest things between you and your dream vacation is your wallet. Plane tickets, regional cuisine, and pocket money can add up more quickly than you think. So it’s important to make sure you establish how much you can spend on your trip ahead of time.

    Take a good, hard look at your bank account and see what you’ve got rattling around in there. It may be more or less than you initially thought when you and your friends were throwing around Thailand as a destination. Map out your likely expenses, once-off and recurring, and see how much you can realistically afford to spend on a trip. And don’t forget to look at different travel sites that can bring down the price of big-ticket items like airfare and rental cars.     3. Choose Your Companions (Wisely)

    When planning your big spring break, another big decision to make early into the process is who you’ll be traveling with. Many great adventure stories feature companions who travel alongside the protagonist through thick and thin. Who would Frodo be without Sam? Finn without Jake, and Dora without Boots? Anakin Skywalker betrayed his companion, and it didn’t exactly turn out very well for him. This goes to show that it’s important to choose your travel buddies wisely.

    All that said being your own travel buddy can lead to incredible personal adventures. While spring break is often pictured as a group activity in media, it doesn’t have to be. You’ll grow a lot from the experience, and you’ll also have unparalleled flexibility.     So you’ve decided that this is the year you’re finally going to go scuba diving in the Bahamas. Congratulations — you’re really making it happen after all this time! You can’t wait to feel the warm water on your skin as you swim with schools of radiant fish. You take your flight, get to your hotel, and start looking for a local instructor. The only thing is, you’re not the only one who decided to fulfill their underwater dreams this year. In fact, so many other people have already booked ahead of time that the instructors are full-up until next month. Whoops.

    Avoid this by booking your reservations ahead of time. You never know how many other people might be planning to do the same activities in the same places at the same times that you are. Well, actually, you’ll have a pretty good idea by looking at the available reservations. Plus, there’s a (good) chance that prices will increase as you get closer to your intended date of departure. So, avoid the headache and just book as much as you can ahead of time.

    5. Map Everything Out On A Calendar

    As you start making more reservations, you might notice that it can be tricky to keep track of them all. What time on what day of what week was your flight, what was the trip ID, and who was going to drive you again? And then, after you land, how exactly are you getting from the airport to your hotel, and what was that reservation number? You can only keep so much in your head at the same time, and forgetting or losing any of this vital information can bog down your whole vacation.

    Rather than set yourself up for frustration, smooth out the road bumps ahead of time by storing important information on a calendar. So many calendars are online nowadays, and you can update them from anywhere. As soon as you make a reservation or agree to meet someone at a certain time and place, just add it to your calendar. The difference between the travel experience of having vital info at a moment’s notice and not — is night and day. Setting everything up takes relatively little work that will pay you back exponentially in the convenience you’ll experience your entire trip.

    6. Prepare Appropriately

    Depending on the kind of trip you’re going to take, you’ll want to make sure you’re well prepared. No two trips are created equal, and some require more preparation than others. You don’t want to be sunbathing in a parka or snowshoeing in a bikini, after all. Or, maybe you do. If heat stroke and hypothermia sound like your cup of tea, then more power to you, but neither is exactly well-advised.

    For each activity you have planned, do a little research and figure out how best to equip yourself for it. Stocking up on the correct “equipment” might even mean packing plenty of water and sunscreen for the beach. Or it could mean making sure your climbing harness still fits and your ropes haven’t frayed. It could even mean researching crime rates in the area you’ll be spending time in and planning exit routes in advance. Safety isn’t always fun, but the fun is more fun when you’re ready for anything.

    7. Temper Your Expectations

    Travel is full of various highs, lows, and unforeseen challenges. You can plan as much as you want, but the reality is that not everything will go according to that plan. A night of stargazing might become a night of rain, and a delicious delicacy might turn into a rumbling rush to the bathroom. It can be incredibly frustrating when it feels like everything is falling apart, especially after you’ve worked so hard to set it all up.

    Set aside some time before you actually leave for your trip to temper your expectations. The Stoics practice a meditative technique called negative visualization that can help you do just that. It might sound counterintuitive, but meditating on things going wrong can prepare your mind for if and when things actually do. And sometimes, when things go even better than you could have imagined, well, isn’t that just grand?

    Set Yourself Up For Success

    A big part of what makes a spring break vacation a success is preparing for it ahead of time. Admittedly, planning can take a lot of up-front work. But that initial investment will pay dividends in priceless memories for you and anyone you travel with.

    Everyone is quick to jump on the bandwagon of “prioritizing yourself.” You should invest in self-improvement. Try to be more self-aware. Take time for yourself and your personal life. Focus on the things that matter most.

    These are all common statements bandied about in casual conversation. Do you know what else they are? They’re vague.

    What does it look like to actually prioritize the things that matter? How can you invest in things like self-awareness, family time, hobbies, passions, and all of the other things that make up a content lifestyle? You need to come up with a strategy, starting with a clear definition of what your lifestyle is in the first place.

    1. Define Your Lifestyle

    The famous French philosopher Blaise Pascal summed up the endless pursuit of happiness when he said, “All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end.”

    It’s an important over-arching concept and a great starting point if you’re looking for ways to invest in your lifestyle. Everyone wants to be happy, and this desire for contentment and fulfillment drives us all — but what does it look like for you? How do you define happiness?

    If you’re spitballing, chances are you can come up with a few points. But the vast majority of people leave the concept of happiness out in the ethers — which is crazy. We live in a world where everyone uses goals, objectives, and KPIs for everything, from annual revenue to how low the electric bill is. Why wouldn’t we have goals for our happiness, as well?

    Start the investment process by writing down your definition of happiness. Start with the big stuff, but don’t be afraid to dig into the details. Include every area of life, too, from good health and relationships to financial elements, hobby-related achievements, and so on. Once you have a list, prioritize what matters most. It’s also a good idea to break things up into important long-term goals and measurable short-term elements that help you reach the longer objectives.

    This isn’t just a fun way to dream. Even if they change as you go along, defining your goals gives you a blueprint to direct your efforts as you invest in different areas of your life. Alright. Now that we’ve set the stage — let’s move on to some of the specific kinds of investments you can use to prioritize your lifestyle.

    2. Invest Time in the Intangibles

    If you’re expecting a generic list of passive income suggestions that can help you do whatever you want, you’ve come to the wrong place. Sure, we’ll cover some ideas for financial freedom further down, but that’s just one part of the puzzle. It’s an important one, for sure, but there are other genuine investment opportunities outside of the dollars and cents — and some of them deserve attention right from the get-go.

    Many areas of life are easy to define, particularly when they do revolve around money. Other lifestyle achievements are harder to define. For instance, you can set up a schedule and pay for karate classes as part of an effort to improve discipline and personal health. However, realizing a long-term ambition of earning a black belt is priceless. It also requires a much harder currency to come by – time.

    Your living arrangement is another good example. Paying your mortgage and utilities allows you to have a living space. And yet, paying for a house is very different from turning it into a home that you want to spend time in. Living in a certain kind of house or in a specific area are also major intangibles that can help you meet your lifestyle goals. Again, time and freedom to make personally-inspired decisions are major factors here.

    The most obvious example of them all is friends and family. You can’t put a price tag on the relationships that matter. It’s cliche, and yet it continues to remain a mighty truth of personal happiness and a content lifestyle.

    LifestyleInvestor, Justin Donald, highlights the importance of investing in the people that you love and how money factors into the equation, “The point of making money is to spend it with people you love. Sadly, many entrepreneurs sacrifice their freedom to attain financial success, preventing them from spending time with those who matter most to them.”

    Having freedom and autonomy of time matters — it’s more valuable than money ever could be. So, as you search for ways to invest in your lifestyle, start by considering how to use the most limited asset of them all: your time.

    3. Invest in Learning

    Most driven people want to reach the end goal. They’re interested in the process only as far as how it will help them reach the finish line. Learning is one area that challenges that entire mindset. Why? Because it’s a lifelong pursuit …and one that can perpetually help you reach your lifestyle goals.

    Entrepreneur and creator of Impossible Ventures Joel Runyon stresses the fact that learning is a lifelong endeavor, “The process of learning — awkwardly trying something new, making mistakes and improving slowly bit by bit — is an art we spend years on as children, but often abandoned later on as we focus on ‘image’ and ‘looking like we know what we’re doing.’”

    Runyon goes on to challenge this natural adult antipathy to awkwardly learning new things over time, “By investing in your self-education, you have a constant reminder that there are things that you’re not good at and can improve on. It’s a constant exercise in humility and a great reminder that learning is a lifelong endeavor.”

    Take a look at the lifestyle blueprint you created back in the first step. What are your passions, hobbies, and interests? How can you invest in them through learning? How can you set bigger and better goals by challenging your status quo and expanding your knowledge base?

    If you’re working a job that makes you unhappy, can you go back to school to make a career pivot? (Just make sure that you don’t set unrealistic expectations for your new career. Every job has its high and low points.) You may even be able to invest in learning within your current career, such as a marketer getting certified as an SEO expert.

    Is there a hobby you can build on through learning? Can you stoke an undeveloped interest in illustrations by taking an art class? Can you buy a better home gym to perfect your bodybuilding side gig? Consider your passions and the areas of life that improve your happiness. Then look beyond your current boundaries and find ways to expand your horizons by investing in learning.

    4. Invest in Financial Freedom

    Alright, we said we’d get here at some point, and here we are. If you want to use investments to prioritize your lifestyle, there’s a good chance that money will factor into the equation sooner or later. Improving your lifestyle through finances starts with investing in healthy personal financial habits.

    For instance, make sure that you’re using a budget and that you’re saving toward your goals and paying down debt over time. Budgets, in particular, can be a game-changer when it comes to enabling your lifestyle. They help you track income, expenses, debts, and general spending habits.

    You can also use different budgets for different occasions. For someone just starting out or who’s bad at gauging how much money they have at any given moment, they may want to use an envelope system. An ambitious saver can adopt a 60/30/10 plan (60% for savings, investing, and debt reduction; 30% on needs; 10% on other spending). There are plenty of other budget systems out there.

    If you don’t have a preferred budgeting approach yet, Due CEO John Rampton points out that “just like when car shopping, you can try the system out first. If it’s not to your liking, you can take another system out for a test drive.” As you use your budget to save money and reduce debt, you gradually gain the financial freedom to sacrifice the bottom line for other intangibles (like time with family or taking a class to get better at a hobby).

    The other elephant in the room here is investing in passive income. We don’t need to belabor the point here. There are literally millions of ways to make your money work for you. From affiliate marketing to peer-to-peer investing to building a well-balanced portfolio (with plenty of dividend stocks), the stronger your passive income pipelines are, the more financial autonomy you’ll have.

    Investing in Your Lifestyle in 2023

    Lifestyle investing isn’t easy. It combines cold, calculated factors like finances and basic living necessities with intangible priorities like health and happiness and tries to tend to the former while enabling the latter.

    The biggest step is accepting the fact that “investing” doesn’t just mean directing a little more cash toward your retirement portfolio. Truly cultivating your lifestyle requires the willingness to invest time and money into multiple areas of life. If you can accept the significant upfront cost of this kind of investment, it can set the stage this year for you to both prioritize and realize the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of.

    Software developer pay spans a notoriously wide range, but few would argue that U.S.-based development costs are “cheap.”

    According to a U.S. News & World Report analysis, the median U.S. software developer earned $120,730 in 2021. Experienced devs can easily command $200,000 per year in cash compensation alone, with incentive pay and company benefits adding significantly to that total.

    You most likely know this already. You also most likely know that complex software development projects take months and involve multiple developers and engineers. “Cost spiral” doesn’t begin to describe the situation.

    You don’t need to be reminded how important it is to cut devops costs wherever possible. Your bosses and shareholders (perhaps one and the same) remind you enough.

    Fortunately, emerging technologies and tools are making it easier than ever to reduce software development expenses without compromising output, efficiency or quality. It’s no exaggeration to say that these new capabilities are revolutionizing software development and helping devops teams save money across the board.

    Let’s take a closer look at four types of emerging capabilities: next-generation project management tools, cloud computing services, task automation tools and ephemeral development environments. Each offers potentially game-changing opportunities for teams looking to work faster, smarter and more efficiently.

    Using next-generation project management tools to drive software development efficiency and collaboration

    Signs of bad project management include missed deadlines, poor quality control, and infighting within teams that need to collaborate closely. These and other direct results of poor project management are harmful to the broader organization (and to the careers of those responsible for them).

    Yet poor project management has a direct financial cost as well. This goes back to what we’ve already discussed: the high cost of labor in a product development environment and, specifically, the very high cost of labor in a software development context. Every day that passes without an anticipated deliverable is a day that brings unanticipated costs. And while every project budget has some built-in wiggle room, said costs eventually become unacceptable.

    The good news is that software development teams can turn to an already-existing library of scalable, easy-to-use project management tools that easily map to devops use cases. Your team may already use some basic project management tools to manage workflows and keep track of deliverables timeframes and responsibilities, but if you haven’t surveyed the landscape and assessed individual tools’ capabilities relative to your team’s needs, you’re likely not maximizing their potential.

    Look for project management tools with the following capabilities:

    • Use cases specifically designed for your specific development framework. For example, Jira’s project management tool is specifically tailored to Agile development teams.
    • Relevant integrations with third-party apps, from general-purpose tools like Google Docs (where your spreadsheets likely live already) to devops, cloud storage, and even CRM software.
    • Sophisticated calendar views that enable visual-oriented team members to “see” their project responsibilities at a glance.
    • Powerful developer APIs that allow you to customize the project management interface to your needs and produce efficiency-oriented outputs.

    Ideally, your team relies on one core project management tool to manage everything it’s working on together, with individual developers free to use additional tools to manage their personal workflows.

    That may require you to cut out a less optimal tool (or several) and disrupt legacy use cases, but it’s better to rip off the Band-Aid now, before a bona fide productivity crisis hits. Further down the road, untangling competing and deeply entrenched workflows will surely prove more costly and more disruptive.

    Leveraging cloud computing services for projects with multiple stakeholders

    Like project management software, cloud computing services no longer count as revolutionary. If your team is small, it might use GSuite for cloud-based storage and collaboration. If it’s larger, it might use Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (whose incomprehensible value only underscores the critical importance of cloud computing).

    And so you’re already aware that cloud computing services make development more efficient by enhancing collaboration, reducing duplication of effort, and sharply cutting reliance on onsite database hosting, file storage and data processing.

    Your team can and should use cloud computing services in additional ways that even more directly improve devops efficiency and cost control:

    • Containerization: Containerization enables software deployment on any computing infrastructure. Bundling app code and file libraries in a self-contained, platform-agnostic unit eliminates the need to match platform-specific software packages (i.e., Windows-compatible) with the correct machines. Containerized deployment is more portable, more scalable and more resilient — and it’s only possible in the cloud.
    • Microservices (vs. monolithic architecture): Microservices break up the development architecture into many small, agile units that communicate via API. Rather than an inflexible “monolith” that needs to be reworked as it scales, microservices can be scaled internally (or new ones created) as needs arise. Like containerization, it’s a much more flexible, agile, and ultimately low-cost way to manage complex devops workflows.

    Automating repetitive tasks throughout the development lifecycle

    Task and workflow automation tools are improving at an incredible clip, and the advantages of next-generation automation are particularly impressive for devops teams. As just one example, telecom giant Ericsson drove significant cost savings by automating key aspects of their software development pipeline and transitioning to a continuous deployment model, according to a study published in Empirical Software Engineering.

    Transitioning to continuous deployment is a time- and cost-intensive process that may not be practical for smaller teams, at least not in the near term. But your team can leverage task automation in many other ways.

    Testing automation deserves special mention here. Automated testing and QA solutions like Robot Framework and Zephyr (respectively) reduce the need for repetitive, labor-intensive poking and prodding by human devs whose efforts are better spent elsewhere. By finding bugs and quality issues earlier in the development workflow, they also reduce the need for costly and time-consuming fixes further along in the process.

    Increasingly, code generation itself is automated, thanks to tools like Eclipse. These generative tools will only improve as processing power increases and training sets expand. Consequently, this sets the stage for a near-future scenario where devs will need to manually write far less code. That, in turn, will allow devops teams to stretch dev resources further. Additionally, it will free up person-hours for more creative or problem-focused work.

    Utilizing ephemeral environments to improve development speed and quality

    Finally, software development teams can achieve efficiency and cost improvements at virtually any scale by utilizing ephemeral environments. These are temporary staging environments that can be created at will, generally for a single-purpose feature test or bug fix, and then eliminated when no longer needed to keep costs low.

    Ephemeral environments offer clear advantages for development teams. They reduce pull request backlogs, a notorious sticking point (and cost driver) for larger teams. They’re isolated, which reduces the risk of bug-inducing branch conflicts. They’re fully automated, which frees up engineers to deal with more important matters. And because they enable more targeted, granular testing, they speed up the development process overall. They also reduce the risk of an unacceptable issue breaching the main code branch. Repairs on the main code branch are much more time-consuming and costly.

    The result is a faster, more efficient workflow that scales with your team in response to demand.     • Augmented reality tools and apps, whose potential impact remains speculative but which will likely play an increasingly important role in software and product development over the next decade

You’ll most likely take advantage of other emerging technologies and tools in the near future too. These may even include some we don’t yet know about. As the pace of innovation accelerates, staying one step ahead of the competition — and doing right by your firm’s stakeholders, financially and otherwise — means watching closely for new tech that can speed up your development timelines and reduce overall devops costs.

    But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In many respects, the future is already here, and you have everything you need to streamline your operations today. Now it’s time to execute.

    What business doesn’t want high output from its employees? Assigning a heavy workload and expecting long hours might seem like an obvious way to get it. However, this stern-taskmaster approach can easily backfire and cause employees to physically and/or mentally disengage from their work.

    Though they might be sitting at their desk, stressed and unhappy employees are unlikely to perform at their best. When overworked employees try to cram every last task into their day, it leaves little time to address their own wellness. They may skip meals, work overtime or get lower-quality sleep. This can lead to absenteeism, like when an employee has to take a sick day due to a looming migraine or sheer exhaustion.

    In contrast, when you prioritize employee happiness, productivity follows. A study of U.K. telecom workers by researchers from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School found that employees who were happy at work were 13% more productive than those who weren’t. These call center reps didn’t achieve their increased output by logging more hours. Rather, they made more calls and earned more sales conversions because they were — you guessed it — happy.

    2. More collaboration among co-workers

    It’s a bit of a chicken-and egg question: Do happy workers collaborate more, or does increased collaboration lead to happier employees? The answer is likely both.

    It’s not hard to imagine that employees would be more eager to team up with sunny-minded colleagues than gloomy ones. There’s research evidence to prove it. A WeWork/Ipsos survey of 4,000 workers in the U.S. and Europe found that over half of all respondents who reported themselves happy at work collaborate with five or more co-workers daily. Unsatisfied workers reported notably lower levels of collaboration — and this lack of collaboration costs businesses.

    A landmark study by consulting giant Deloitte found that strong collaboration practices benefit businesses in nearly every dimension. By putting their heads together, employees can solve problems faster, better and more creatively. The time savings resulting from collaboration amounted, in Deloitte’s estimation, to an annual $1,660 per worker and manager, with enhanced work quality contributing another $2,517 per worker and manager each year. Whether employee happiness is cause or effect, the happiness-collaboration symbiosis drives innovation, growth and profitability, offering plenty of reasons to make it a priority.

    3. Stronger client and customer relationships

    A happy employee can boost client relationships in several ways. First of all, the employee working with the client is the one who will leave a lasting impression. If they’re unhappy in the workplace, those feelings may seep into client meetings. Furthermore, an employee who is feeling overworked and stressed may not offer beneficial services to the client, as doing so could add to their workload. Not only do you miss the chance of an upsell, you risk not meeting the client’s expectations and ultimately losing them to a competitor.

    On the flip side, a happy, unstressed employee will aim to make your company look good. They’ll be more available to clients and have the time to develop and foster a relationship, which is crucial to the success of the account. Such positive relationships help build client trust in your business, leading to long-standing partnerships and increased revenue for the company.

    If anything, the relationship between employee happiness and customer satisfaction is even clearer in more consumer-oriented businesses. A Glassdoor study found that every one-star increase in a company’s rating on the platform resulted overall in a 1.3-point rise in customer satisfaction scores — an effect that was even greater in high-touch industry sectors like hospitality and retail. Customer happiness drives increased retention, which in turn yields higher revenues, increased profitability, and brand advocacy. The bottom line is that an investment in employee happiness can produce big dividends whether you run a B2B or B2C business.

    4. Higher retention rates

    As the Great Resignation vividly demonstrated, employees who aren’t happy at work won’t hesitate to leave. And that’s something business owners definitely want to avoid. In Gallup’s conservative estimate, a company will spend anywhere from one-half to two times an employee’s annual salary to replace the departed worker. That’s not petty cash.

    Not only are there the hard costs of advertising the opening, interviewing candidates and training subsequent hires, there’s a significant cost in lowered productivity. It can take a year or more for a new employee to get fully up to speed, and the colleagues who are training them get pulled away from their own work, causing a further hit to productivity. Add in skill loss and damage to the customer experience, and it’s not hard to see why employee turnover is so harmful.

    The corollary is that higher retention rates can benefit your company in numerous ways. As noted, you can expect increased productivity because your employees are already trained and know the company’s offerings and how the business works. Company morale is higher because coworkers aren’t losing the working relationships they’ve developed — or questioning why they should stay when so many others are heading for the door. In short, you’ll save time, money, and headaches by keeping your best employees around long-term.

    How to make your employees happy

    Offer an attractive compensation package

    With relatively few exceptions, the number one reason people take a job is to get paid. Coming in a close second are the benefits that employers provide, chief among them health coverage and a retirement plan.

    As an index of the employee happiness potential of good benefits, consider the following. A 2022 Willis Towers Watson survey found that 81% of employees who were pleased with their benefits would stick with their current employer for another two years or more. Just 51% of the displeased would say the same. To make your employees happy, your compensation package should be “competitive-plus.” Aim for the upper range of the prevailing salary scale, and consider adding additional perks (childcare reimbursements, transit pass discounts, etc.) to the expected health insurance, PTO and retirement benefits trifecta.

    Another way to improve your compensation package is to make the benefits you offer easy to sign up for and use. To streamline plan selection and enrollment, for example, the Benebee app from Hamilton Insurance Agency walks employees through the signup process and provides instant access to virtual insurance cards. That means employees always have the card they need on hand, even if you switch providers. As Hamilton vice president of business development Jason Zuccari notes, when it comes to benefits, you should “make sure that they’re as usable as they are valuable.”

    Make flexibility your watchword

    Remote work was a rising tide that the COVID-19 pandemic turned into a tsunami. Now that millions of employees have gotten a taste of remote work life, many aren’t willing to give it up again. Others are eager to return to the office, perhaps because they crave face-to-face interaction or they want to reclaim their dining room table. Either way, the upshot is this: Your business must offer employees schedule and location flexibility.

    Some employees might prefer a set schedule and the ability to leave work behind when they go home at night. Others may be more productive if they’re working from home a few days per week or even after so-called business hours. This variability argues against in-office or at-home requirements. Instead, give your employees some guidelines and trust them to choose the settings where they will be at their most productive.

    You might even follow the lead of the more than 70 U.K. companies that are experimenting with a four-day workweek. When asked how the pilot program was going, 35 of the 41 survey respondents said their company would “likely” or “very likely” continue the policy past the trial stage. And why not? All but two of the companies had found that productivity had either stayed the same or gotten better. In fact, six of them reported that it had improved significantly.

    Protect their time

    An inexpensive — even cost-saving — way to improve employee productivity and happiness is to eliminate superfluous meetings and check-ins. Unnecessary meetings eat up valuable time and energy across the company. Instead of using recurring meetings to check on the status of a project, use project management software to stay up-to-date in real time instead.

    Some meetings are necessary, but you can undoubtedly make them shorter and more efficient. Invite only those people whose input is necessary to make decisions. Others who simply need to be informed can be updated via email or other channels. Develop and pre-circulate a meeting agenda, and when meeting time arrives, be sure to stick to it.

    Or you might take your cue from companies like Atlassian and Facebook and consider scheduling meetings on certain days of the week. This allows employees to focus solely on their work on the other days. The time saved by eliminating unnecessary meetings can be put toward more productive matters, such as investing in career development opportunities for your employees.

    Employee happiness is an investment worth making

    Although you may need to shell out some money to keep your employees happy, it will be well worth it in the long run. When you show employees that you care about their happiness, you’re building a bond of trust and loyalty. Not only does this lead to a happier and more productive workplace, but it also helps save money by retaining employees and avoiding the costs of hiring someone new.

    2. Songkran — Chiang Mai, Thailand, April 13-15

    After all that color-fun, you might need a bit of a rinse. Thankfully, Songkran in Thailand’s got you covered if you’re willing to wait a few weeks. Otherwise, maybe take a shower. Songkran is a massive water fight to celebrate the new year in Thailand.

    Every year in April, Chiang Mai becomes a water war-zone, with people of all ages carrying around squirt guns, water balloons, and homemade water-flinging catapults. Thailand can be incredibly hot and humid in April (around 95 degrees Fahrenheit), so the chilled water fight is a welcome relief.     3. Hanami — Japan, Spring

    Perhaps it’s because life is fleeting that it’s also beautiful. You can’t capture the best moment of your favorite song because, as soon as you pause it, the music stops. In a similar manner, Hanami is a spring festival throughout Japan where people picnic and enjoy the transient beauty of the cherry blossoms.

    The sakura cherry blossom trees of Japan are famously beautiful, but short-lived. Rather than hold onto the moment in futility, Hanami picnickers simply enjoy the beauty while they can. At Hanami, you can hear clinks of tea sets paired with delicious Japanese sweets as soft pink and white petals flutter lazily in the breeze. Japan is a thin but long country where spring rolls down from north to south. If you’re going to try and catch the sakura blooms in their delicately short window of time, make sure you schedule appropriately!

    4. Tulip Time — Holland, Michigan, May 1-9

    Holland is famous for its beautiful tulips, and Tulip Time is their annual celebration of these colorful flowers. Over six million flowers transform the landscape, dotting it with so much color it rivals Holi. So pack your clogs and book a trip to Amsterdam for — wait, where is this again? Michigan? Huh.

Tulip Time is a great option to get some springtime color, especially if traveling internationally just isn’t in the cards this spring.     5. Cimburijada — Bosnia, March 21

    Do you like eggs? I mean, do you really, really like eggs? If your answer is yes, then consider heading over to Bosnia on the 21 of March. All over the country, Bosnians celebrate the advent of spring with a scrambled egg festival. Yes, scrambled egg connoisseurs have finally found their time to shine.

    Traditionally, Bosnians will make their way to a nearby river to break their morning fast. You’ll hear the scraping of cast iron pans and smell the wafting of fresh coffee as the sun glistens on the moving water. In Bosnia, eggs symbolize new life and the promise of warm weather as the sun returns to its higher position in the sky. People will be handing out free scrambled eggs all morning, so make sure to bring your appetite with you.

    6. Falles — Spain, March 1-19

    Scrambled eggs and flowers are nice, sure, but if you’re looking for something a bit rowdier, head on over to Spain this spring. Fallas is a festival commemorating St. Joseph and the Spring Equinox. It’s loud, and it’s fun, and, most uniquely, it’s smokey. Patrons build puppets or dolls, sometimes massive, called ninots that are often bawdy and satirical in nature. These effigies are paraded around through street parties before being engulfed in roaring flames at night.

    Party-goers dress in colorful attire, dancing and drinking throughout the festival. Though the whole festival takes place from the beginning of March, the main events are held over five days, from the 14-19. You can enjoy savory Spanish tortilla and drink cups of delicious sweet melted chocolate.

    7. Rio Carnival — Brazil, February 17-22

    Perhaps Falles seems like child’s play to you. A great festival, to be sure, but you’re looking for something even bigger and louder. Well, when it comes to festivals, few are bigger or louder than the Rio Carnival in Brazil. Carnival is a Christian-tinted festival with Pagan roots held every year before Lent. It is also quite literally named “The biggest show on Earth.”

    While there are Carnivals all over the world, the Carnival in Rio steals the show. Over two million people flood the streets of Rio de Janeiro to dance, sing, and drink for almost a week. Stupendous floats helmed by dancers of various Samba schools roll in procession at massive events. The Samba dancers are dressed ornately and expressively, putting on shows they train all year for. The explosive music, cheers, and vibrant atmosphere are unique and unforgettable. That is, of course, unless you drink too much while you’re there.

    8. Wildflower Blooms — California, Spring

    California’s environment gets lots of press for its notorious wildfires and increasingly dry deserts. However, there is a good period of time, from late February to early April, when California’s rolling hills are in bloom. It doesn’t happen every year, but when the conditions are right, wildflowers carpet the hills in various spectacular colors, stretching for miles on end.

    Looking at the wildflower tapestries, lupines, daisies, and the aptly-named Indian paintbrush stretch across your vision in pleasing color. The smells of spring permeate the air in the gentle weather of California spring. While the blooms don’t have a particular festival associated with them, they offer a good opportunity to enjoy local foods and wines.

    It will be difficult, but sometimes you’ll just have to decline certain projects if it’s within your power. If you’re biting off more than you can chew, you’ll never feel like you’re catching up on your balancing act. It’s important to know your limits and not push them too hard.

    While it’s easy to push off home projects, declining work projects can be a tricky challenge. You’re employed to do a job, and you need to do that to the best of your abilities. Nevertheless, you may be able to decline overtime hours or extra projects being handed down to help maintain your work-life balance.

    Very rarely will you feel like your life is in perfect balance all the time. However, that shouldn’t stop you from keeping things in order. The more you try to balance your work and home projects, the more you can accomplish while undergoing less stress.

    Budgets can be flexible. You don’t have to stick to a hard cap if you don’t want to. However, it’s sound financial practice to at least keep a running total of what costs should be and what to expect.     Every family comes with its own unique traditions. Some are simple, like hosting an annual barbeque for the Fourth of July.     Several fashion experts spoke on how to dress for virtual meetings at a fashion show with producer Amy Olson, designer Lagi Nadeau, and stylist Lisa Marie McComb. And Zoom itself has given some great help and tips on how to look better on screen.

    Experts have given us time hacks, and early prep for your Zoom meetings is one way to hack your day.

    Getting things started for your Zoom days

    Open your blinds and drapes, and allowing the light to stream in can help you present your best self on Zoom. According to Amy Olson, the optimal lighting is towards the window because natural light illuminates your whole face.

    The producer suggests that you test the lighting on camera before your video conference. Testing will ensure that the venue seems bright and that you get your meeting started properly. She suggests putting a lamp behind your computer or phone to brighten the room if you need extra light. She even suggests removing a lampshade to increase the amount of light. Olson also suggests framing the photo ahead of time by noting what’s behind you in the camera’s perspective and clearing the backdrop of any clutter.

    Nowadays, you can even purchase great-looking “fake” backdrops that you can change up pre-meeting.

    Outfit suggestions for a Zoom meeting

    For virtual meetings, our experts recommend using vivid jewel tones. The more brilliant the color, the better. Sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple are all great choices — the brighter, the better.

    Lisa Marie McComb adds that she’s generally dressed in basics — navy, grey, black, camel, and white. But she’s changed her mind about “waist-up” meetings. Wearing a magical hue boosts your mood. People see your attitude on Zoom.

    Bright patterns and designs also perform well on camera, according to the stylist. She adds bold stripes to bring positive attention.

    According to Olson, choose form-fitting shirts and sweaters for the most beautiful video apparel shape.

    If your shirts still seem loose on camera, try tucking extra fabric behind your back and into your waistband.

    Experts say the public would be surprised at how many pins people use. Pins create a shape on the body when styling professionals for photo shoots, says Olson. For Zoom meetings, the same thing might happen — you may decide to use a clothespin to drawback excess fabric and create a waistline.

    Because the camera focuses on your face and neckline, Nadeau suggests using unusual clothing features. Something like a bow blouse or a camisole with a jacket and scarf.

    Before your Zoom appointment, the designer suggests having a practice run on camera. When you’re on camera, things will read differently, she explains.

    Wear slacks or a dress with shoes. According to insiders, you would for an in-person professional meeting or job interview. According to Olson, even if the camera doesn’t catch your lower half, it’s crucial to wear head to toe. Wearing shoes help you feel more grounded and put together.

    Although it’s fashionable to wear stacked bracelets and chandelier earrings, they may cause interference with the video microphone. Stick to essential accessories to be safe, adds Olson.

    Getting to know your cosmetics for Zoom screentime

    You may need to add extra makeup for Zoom since the video camera may wash out your complexion.

    According to Olson, the cheekbones, highlighters, and bronzers may contour the face and provide depth for the camera. Meanwhile, top eyeliner and mascara can open up the eyes.

    Apply concealer beneath the eyes, on top of the eyelid, and just below the brow from the center to the edge as a highlighter. According to McComb, it will make you appear well-rested for your meeting.

    According to the stylist, choose a foundation shade that is one shade brighter than your skin tone and mix it in with your makeup. Afterward, lightly dust a small layer of face powder over the T-zone to diffuse any shininess, since the camera has a tendency to magnify shine on the face.

    Apply a splash of lip color, such as coral red lipstick, to complete your look. Alternatively, McComb recommends using a tinted lip balm to give your lips natural color and keep them from looking dry.

    Before your meeting, comb any stray hairs back into place. The light always seems to grab and highlight wild hair flying around — “so use a hair treatment or pomade to smooth out dry or flyaway hair,” explains Nadeau.

    Finally, Olson recommends using the face-correcting filters on Zoom, such as Touch Up My Appearance, to soften your appearance and level out your skin tone.

    Let’s talk about bad habits. No, not the hit song released by superstar musician Ed Sheeran. We’re talking about the little things you do every day that are slowly chipping away at your quality of life and personal well-being.

    When looking for a featured image for this article — I noted that almost every photo under “bad habits” showed an individual smoking. Smoking is awful for you and a filthy habit — but there are SO many bad habits that will take a person down a rabbit hole faster than smoking will.

    The bad habits listed in this piece are “light” bad habits, easily changed to better your life.

    This short list doesn’t take into account drug use, sleeping too long, going everywhere late (tardiness), driving too fast, or being distracted like an idiot (my brother was hit on his bike by a cell phone driver) — allowing yourself to dislike a person based on gender, race, or any other social issue you perceive as “incorrect.” The social issues that we face at this time in history are all bad habits that we will want to work hard to erase in our lives.

    Any tribal prejudice can be changed in our own lives. Things like discriminatory behaviors in the workplace or anywhere else need to be addressed in our own life because we want to change — not because society is forcing something upon us. Behaviors or attitudes toward out-groups based on in-group thought should be faced squarely in ourselves — they are bad habits, and you can change them.

    Habits come in many shapes and sizes. These range from your regular morning routine to the nervous ticks that get you through the workday. Some habits are beneficial, like refilling your water bottle often to remind you to stay hydrated. Others are not so great, like biting your fingernails, chewing on your hair, or talking too fast when you’re nervous.

    There are some bad habits that are relatively harmless. However, there are others that can seriously be putting you behind in the race of life. This list outlines some of the most common and detrimental habits that can snowball into significant problems — but note — most of these bad habits are an easy fix.

    1. Staying Up Too Late

    Sleep is an essential part of everyday life. Without proper sleep, it’s incredibly difficult to function. Just think about the last time you worked a shift after a rough night. Did you find it difficult to remain focused and motivated? Just imagine how you would feel after several consecutive nights of little sleep.

    The common culprit when it comes to tiredness and fatigue is a bad nighttime routine. Without planning to, you’ll end up watching Netflix for too long or scrolling on your phone way past your bedtime. Soon your alarm will be set for only five hours, and you’ve already set yourself up for failure in the morning.

    To fix this habit, you need to exhibit a little more discipline. Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. If you really have to, consider setting up a personal schedule that covers everything from brushing your teeth to turning off the lights. As you successfully get more sleep, you should notice an increase in energy and morale.

    2. Scrolling for Too Long

    Everyone is guilty of this from time to time. You may have stumbled upon this article because you’ve been scrolling on your device for too long. Technology is a wonderful addition to our lives, but it’s also dangerously addictive. A lot of time is wasted on screen time when it could be used for so many greater things.

    This isn’t to say that you should cut electronics out of your life completely. Social media does provide some high-quality entertainment and helps you stay connected to friends and family. However, you should be actively looking for ways to moderate your screen time better. You can download an app or use internal features that record and limit your screen time.

    Another potential solution is to try multitasking. If you want to scroll through TikTok, try doing so on a stationary bicycle. This way, you can enjoy those funny videos you love so much while simultaneously getting some beneficial exercise. You can get really creative, like setting up your favorite YouTube stream while cooking in the kitchen or leaving your phone in a different room while at the dinner table.

    3. Compulsive Snacking

    This bad habit became a problem for many during the peak of Covid-19. When working from home, the temptation to sneak to the kitchen to grab a snack was always lingering. Sure, this might’ve helped keep you afloat during a very uncertain time, but it may have developed into a questionable habit leading into the future.

    Compulsive snacking can quickly ruin even the most well-balanced of diets. You’re adding extra, unplanned calories that can lead to weight gain or even an unbalanced blood sugar level. As your physical health deteriorates, you’ll find it more difficult to complete regular daily activities.

    There’s nothing wrong with having a snack from time to time. As with most habits, you need to exhibit some self-control. Try to incorporate your snacks into your meal planning, so your nutritional habits aren’t compromised. You can also purchase healthier snacks that contain fewer sugars and fats, which can be worrisome.

    4. Slouching at Your Desk

    A lot of work today is done sitting at a desk at a computer. In fact, that might be where you’re sitting right now. If that’s the case, take a moment to reflect on your posture. Is your back hunched over? How is your neck positioned?

    When you’re young, bad posture doesn’t seem to affect you at all. Teenagers slouch all the time, after all, with very few apparent consequences. As you get older, however, even slight deviations from proper posture can cause pain and discomfort that derail your productivity and quality of life. Crane your neck over your laptop for too long, and you’ll be feeling stiff for the rest of the week.

A monitor stand can raise your screen to eye level, so you’re no longer straining your neck while at the computer.

    5. Grinding Your Teeth

    Teeth grinding isn’t usually a habit that you’re aware of. Most people with a teeth-grinding problem do so at night when they’re asleep. However, just because you’re not aware of teeth grinding doesn’t mean you’re not being affected by it.

    If you often wake up with a headache, this could be a sign that you’re grinding your teeth in the night. Dealing with headaches is never fun, and looking for ways to eliminate them should be a top priority. You may also be sleeping poorly due to teeth grinding, causing you to wake up without feeling well-rested.

    Consider contacting your dentist to see if they can spot signs of teeth grinding and help you overcome this nighttime habit. They may help you create a night guard that will protect your teeth from grinding together at night. For an at-home solution, over-the-counter pain medication and warm compresses can help reduce inflammation and pain in the jaw.

    6. Self-Sabotaging

    This may just be the worst bad habit that a person can have. It can lead to the development of a lot of other bad habits. Self-sabotaging can be defined as getting in the way of your own success and development, whether intentional or otherwise.

    There are many reasons why people might self-sabotage. It could be due to a lack of self-esteem or a coping mechanism to deal with past trauma. Individuals begin to think incorrectly that they don’t deserve success and happiness. They justify poor actions due to this, turning to alcohol, video game addictions, and even simple laziness to try and fill an empty void.

    Getting a business up and running is difficult. Especially when your business needs to meet age and business credit requirements to apply for business loans and government contracts.

    Getting a shelf corporation has been touted as a way to skip those barriers to entry, but it may be more trouble than it’s worth. 

    What Is a Shelf Corporation?

    A shelf corporation is a company formed solely to sell it in the future. Much like aging a bottle of wine, the shelf corporation gets stored away until it reaches a ripe age to sell at. 

    Often this includes establishing related services such as:

    • Business bank account
    • Employer Identification Number (EIN)
    • Filed business tax returns
    • Established business credit 

    Shelf corporations go by many different names, but it’s not to be confused with a shell company. Shell companies are often used to conceal illegitimate dealings. Shelf companies might straddle the line of legality but they can also be used legally.

    Other names for shelf corporations include:

    • Aged corporations
    • Off-the-shelf companies
    • Credit ready corporations
    • Seasoned shelf corporations

    Typically, these types of corporations don’t engage in business activities and they usually don’t hold any assets or liabilities when they’re put on the market. The only exception is the state fees paid to maintain good standing. 

    Ideally, the shelf company buyer purchases a mature company with a clean slate which helps them:

    • Qualify for bidding on government contracts
    • Present the appearance of corporate longevity and stability
    • Skip the process of building corporate credit
    • Avoid the paperwork of establishing a business outright

    Shelf companies seem like a shortcut to establishing an aged corporation on your own. However, it can also be seen as fraudulent or deceptive when using this to acquire business loans or other opportunities where your business age is needed to qualify. 

    Are Shelf Corporations Legal?

    Shelf corporations land in a legal gray area. There are no official laws dedicated to taking them down, but it could still create very real legal issues for you. 

    In any situation where the age or established corporate credit of the shelf LLC qualifies your business for a loan or other opportunity that you don’t qualify for without it, you’re taking a big risk. 

    For example, let’s say you buy a 10-year-old shelf corporation with an established credit history so you can qualify for a government contract.

    You win the contract, but can’t fulfill the requirements because you’re still a new business underneath the facade of the shelf company. When they investigate why your services are not up to par, you may need a lawyer if the government decides to prosecute. 

    From there, a judge decides the outcome and you might be on the hook for fraud. 

    So while a shelf corporation might get you what you want, it could potentially land you in hot water for misrepresenting your business. 

    According to Reuters, Wyoming Corporate Services, which sells aged shelf corporations, has had multiple civil lawsuits against the companies registered there since 2007. These lawsuits include alleged unpaid taxes, securities fraud, and trademark infringement. 

    I don’t think that’s the type of crowd you want to get mixed up with. 

    How Much Do They Cost?

    There’s no getting around it, shelf companies are expensive. The older the existing business is, the more money it’ll cost you. Younger corporations are sometimes more affordable and typically start around $650. 

    The ones found on Wyoming Corporate Services assign lower price ranges to the shelf LLCs that are only a few months old. At a year old, these prices jump up to about $1,000. 

    With a 15 years or older company, you might see prices of up to $6,695. In one case, there was a recorded sale of a shelf company for $10,000. 

    Risks of Using a Shelf Corporation

    To be completely upfront, shelf corporations have been used for some shady stuff – money laundering, tax evasion, and running scams to name a few. Plus there’s the risk that it might not even work for what you’re planning. 

    They’re Expensive

    Compared to the cost of starting a new company the traditional way, buying a shelf corporation is a much more costly venture. If you’re choosing to buy a young shelf corporation just to skip the paperwork of starting a business, then it might not be the best use of your resources. 

    As we mentioned before, an aged shelf corporation can reach up to $10,000. At the very least, you’re handing over $650 for a shelf LLC that’s a few months old. 

    Unlike many years ago, starting a business has become relatively easy and cost-effective for some industries. You could save that money for another business expense instead. Plus, it’s a lot of money to spend when there’s no guarantee that it’ll work for the reason you need it. 

    They Could Have Negative History Attached To Them

    Many aged corporation vendors claim that the corporations they sell are clean slates with no assets, no liabilities, and no problems. That’s not always true. 

    If you’re buying an aged shelf corporation with established credit lines, then you usually won’t know what’s on that credit report until after you buy. That could mean any number of liabilities attached to the company and since it’s yours now, you’re responsible for the business activity.

    That leaves the potential for stolen identities or even someone with criminal records acting as a corporate officer of your company. The worst part is, none of the information needed for due diligence is offered up by the aged corporation vendors. So you find out after you’ve made an expensive purchase. That’s some serious buyer’s remorse. 

    They Might Not Work

    Vendors selling an aged shelf corporation present you with a ton of potential benefits, but there are zero guarantees that buying an aged shelf corporation will work. 

    Using it to bypass credit and business age standards to get business financing? 

    Lenders might detect your scheme and deny your applications. And if you already have open tradelines with them, they may choose to close your accounts since you tried to circumvent their system for managing credit risk. 

    Aged corporations aren’t new. The government and most business lenders already know what to look for and will quickly cut ties with your ready made company. 

    How to Establish Business Credit the Right Way

    Today, starting a business is much easier than in previous years. Most times you can do everything online through your state website. It only takes a few days and a small fee to file the company registration. Making it significantly cheaper than buying an aged shelf company.

    From there, you can get a free EIN for your limited liability company through the IRS website within a few minutes. You can also register for a DUNS number for free as well. 

    While you won’t be applying for business loans right out the gate, you can start building legitimate business credit by opening other business credit accounts:

    These are the easiest accounts to start with before seeking other forms of business financing. In many cases, there are options for business owners who have good personal credit scores but no corporate credit yet. 

    Two to three business credit tradelines are suggested for the fastest credit growth. Just make sure you pay them on time, every time. Unlike personal credit, being even one day late on your business credit payments can negatively impact your score. 

    Finally, you’ll need to keep an eye on your corporate credit to ensure that everything is reported accurately. By following these steps, you’ll save money on buying an aged corporation by developing legitimate business credit instead. 

    Buying an aged shelf corporation might seem like a worthy shortcut to an established business until you look further into it. In reality, it opens you up to a significant amount of risk, requires a large investment, and could result in legal trouble.

    Building credit the right way might take longer, but it’s not nearly as risky.
