Firefighters responded to a fatal house fire in the 600 block of NW Douglas Street about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, the Burleson Fire Department said.

The two people who died at a hospital after firefighters found them in a garage while battling a house fire in Burleson were a mother and son, a neighbor said.
A next-door neighbor said he occasionally mowed the lawn of the home where a woman and her special-needs son lived, in a conversation with the Star-Telegram.
Jordan, who declined to give his last name, said he started smelling smoke at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday.
“I thought it was my house, so I started running around my house trying to find out where it was coming from, and that’s when I saw it over my fence that their house is on fire,” he said.
As he started to dial 911, he heard the ambulances and firefighters arriving. “I went out there, and I let them know that there’s two people that live there,” Jordan said.
Firefighters responded to the house fire in the 600 block of NW Douglas Street about 12:30 a.m., the Burleson Fire Department said.
When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy fire and smoke with flames coming through the roof. Firefighters began attacking the fire and searched the home in case anyone was inside, officials said.
More than 20 fire units from Burleson, Crowley, Fort Worth and CareFlite Ground EMS responded to the house fire, officials said.
The two adult victims were taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where they later died, officials said. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has not identified the victims.
Jordan said he sat outside until the firefighters started pulling the mother and son out. “I was like, I don’t want to watch this anymore, that’s too disheartening and emotional,” he said.
“They’re a really nice family. Just kept to themselves for the most part,” Jordan said. “It was sad, because it’s one of those things where in a moment, you can just lose everything.”
After the fire, Jordan said he thought about his smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
In scenarios like Sunday’s house fire, Jordan said communities should have a plan, especially for families with children by teaching them that if there’s a fire, they should break a window and get out by the fastest route possible, he said.
The fire was fully extinguished, and no other homes were damaged, officials said.
The Burleson Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire with assistance from the Tarrant County Arson Task Force and Burleson police, officials said.
