    Ex-White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang were guests at the Fortune Future of Finance conference on Thursday. The subject of the 2024 election came up. When asked about the impact that a return of former President Donald Trump would have on the business landscape if he were reelected, Scaramucci was blunt: “terrible.”

    “He would be terrible for the economy and terrible for business,” said the founder and managing partner of SkyBridge Capital. The economy has been predictable, and favorable for businesses, because of constitutional separation of powers, Scaramucci explained. Trump wants to obliterate those separations and embrace people and functions that would allow him to have total control. So-called “unitary executive power” would give the president totalitarian powers over the executive branch of government with exclusive rights to shape and enforce laws. It would make Trump “uber powerful,” said Scaramucci, and throughout history, he said, that has been catastrophic for the economy wherever it has happened.

    “It’s a disaster for the economy, a disaster for the world, and a disaster for your business,” he said, adding that Trump would be “an orange wrecking ball for this society.”

    Similarly, former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang said Trump would “be a catastrophe” for businesses if he were elected president a second time.

    “He’s learned from his mistakes last time, which was hiring responsible adults” who tamped down Trump’s policy instincts, said Yang, co-chair of the Forward Party, a centrist political party he founded in 2021. Yet, Yang warned that if the election were held today, Trump would certainly win. The only question in his mind is whether something changes in the next six months in swing states, where Yang said Biden is underperforming relative to Trump, despite spending Biden’s considerable war chest.

    Scaramucci noted that there are currently 40 Republicans who are publicly against Trump’s reelection bid, including former Vice President Mike Pence. If dozens of people who worked at a company came together and said a product or company was awful and could kill you, he said, people would listen. Yet in this case it’s a mystery that Trump has garnered such steadfast support, he said.

    Scaramucci only worked at the White House for 11 days, from July 21 to July 31 in 2017, but related one tale about his time in the Oval Office. Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan and Trump were arguing and Trump was pointing his finger at Ryan saying, “You work for me. You work for me,” Scaramucci recalled. Ryan told Trump, “I don’t work for you.” Trump then looked to Scaramucci to confirm as if asking, “Is that right? He doesn’t work for me?” Scaramucci remembered. “And Trump doesn’t like that,” Scaramucci added, making a point about Trump’s interest in autocratic control.

    Scaramucci joked about how his short tenure at the White House has evolved into its own indicator of time. For instance, the shortest-serving prime minister in British history, Liz Truss, lasted 45 days from Sept. 6, 2022 to Oct. 20, 2022. Or, she lasted the equivalent of “4.1 Scaramuccis,” he said. “People are very sensitive,” Scaramucci said; Truss “got very upset.” 

    Joking aside, Scaramucci warned that there will be two films playing at your local cinema on Election Day. Those films are: Weekend at Bernie’s or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, he said.

    “You can either have an elderly guy that is somewhat forgetful, or a lunatic who needs a lobotomy.”

    Will Andrew Yang join Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s ticket as the third-party hopeful’s VP? Probably not, but that apparently hasn’t stopped Kennedy from trying.

    Puck News reports that at the end of January, Kennedy called Yang and asked if he would want to be his number two. According to the outlet, Yang was “noncommittal on the call,” and is extremely unlikely to team up with Kennedy for a couple pretty big reasons. For starters, Yang has been a vocal proponent of Dean Phillips, and endorsed the Democratic candidate last month. Then there’s the fact that Kennedy is famously anti-vaccine—and once claimed that Anne Frank had more options than anti-vaxxers—whereas Yang was a major advocate of COVID vaccines and vaccine passports.

    According to Puck, though, Kennedy has cast a wide net for a number two, and has been “calling everyone.” And while Yang appears likely to say no, the Kennedy scion very much needs someone to say yes, as a number of states require candidates to have a VP nominee in order to get on the ballot.

    In an interview with NBC News that aired on Monday, Kennedy said he would announce a running mate within 30 days. He also said he will not drop out even if polls show him drawing considerable votes from Joe Biden or Donald Trump. “I’m not going to bow out of the race,” he declared. “I think Americans should have a choice—that they shouldn’t be forced to choose the least of two evils. That they should be able to vote in a democracy, or for candidates that they like, that inspire them and who they want to run.”

    Elon Musk joins hundreds calling for a six-month pause on AI development in an open letter

    Billionaire Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang joined hundreds calling for a six-month pause on AI experiments in an open letter — or we could face “profound risks to society and humanity.”

    “Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks,” reads the open letter, posted on the website of Future of Life Institute, a non-profit. “Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us?” 

    The futurist collective, backed by Musk, previously stated in a 2015 open letter that they supported development of AI to benefit society, but were wary of the potential dangers.

    The latest open letter, signed by 1,124 people as of Wednesday afternoon, points to OpenAI’s GPT-4 as a warning sign. The current version, the company boasts, is more accurate, human-like, and has the ability to analyze and respond to images. It even passed a simulated bar exam.

    “At some point, it may be important to get independent review before starting to train future systems, and for the most advanced efforts to agree to limit the rate of growth of compute used for creating new models,” a recent post from OpenAI states.

    “We agree. That point is now,” the futurists write. “This does not mean a pause on AI development in general, merely a stepping back.”

    It may seem at odds with the billionaire’s own artificial intelligence efforts.

    “I’m a little worried about the AI stuff,” Musk said from a stage earlier this month — surrounded by Tesla executives, reports Reuters.

    But researchers that have spoken to CBS News said the same — albeit a little more directly. 

    “I think that we should be really terrified of this whole thing,” Timnit Gebru, an AI researcher, told CBS Sunday Morning earlier this year.

    Some are worried that people will use ChatGPT to flood social media with phony articles that sound professional, or bury Congress with “grassroots” letters that sound authentic.

    “We should understand the harms before we proliferate something everywhere, and mitigate those risks before we put something like this out there,” Gebru told Sunday Morning.

    The proposed pause should be looked on as a way to make AI development “more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, trustworthy, and loyal,” while working alongside lawmakers to create AI governance systems. 

    “Society has hit pause on other technologies with potentially catastrophic effects on society. We can do so here,” the letter reads. “Let’s enjoy a long AI summer, not rush unprepared into a fall.”

    Democratic strategist Paul Begala took aim at “pain-in-the-ass white liberals on Twitter” for being potential roadblocks to President Joe Biden’s reelection. (Watch the video below.)

    Begala, a CNN contributor, debated former presidential and New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang on the network Tuesday over Biden’s viability to win again in 2024.

    Yang also suggested Biden would shrink from debates and questioned his vigor during the 2020 primary process. “All of a sudden he developed it,” Begala snapped back.

    Begala, who helped orchestrate former President Bill Clinton’s winning presidential campaign in 1992 and advised a super PAC that helped get former President Barack Obama reelected in 2012, launched an impassioned defense of Biden.

    “You’re missing the most important thing, Andrew,” Begala said. “The early states are full of white liberals. They don’t like Joe. Then when we move to real Democrats, African Americans in the south, they loved him and he steamrolled everybody. Because in my party, the heart and soul of the party are people of color, not pain-in-the-ass white liberals on Twitter. I’m sorry to use bad language.”

    About 9 in 10 Black voters cast their ballot for Biden in the 2020 election. Black voters’ support for Biden dipped since he took office, but remains relatively high. A recent NPR-Marist poll found that 71% of Black voters approved of Biden’s job performance, vs. 43% of white voters and 39% of Latino voters.

    Biden’s overall approval rating among Democrats is 87%, according to the poll.
