RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Next Monday is the deadline for UNC Health and Cigna to come to an agreement on a new contract before Cigna patients lose in-network coverage.

ABC11 reached out to both parties who confirmed those negotiations are ongoing and they’re still hopeful a deal can be reached before Monday’s deadline.

Any lapse in that contract would carry major implications for thousands of people.

UNC Health patients covered by Cigna would either face much higher out of network healthcare costs or need to find a new provider.

A Raleigh-based patient advocate said it’s a difficult choice for patients.

“This time of year in particular, everyone’s met their deductible or they’re close to meeting their deductible. So it has a financial and an emotional impact especially if you’re in treatment,” said Rachel Vaughters.

In response to our questions, UNC Health, said in a statement:

“Our goal is to reach a fair agreement that ensures patients can continue receiving care at UNC Health without interruption, unexpected costs, delays in care or denials of care. We recognize that this situation will be concerning and overwhelming for our patients. We will work closely with them to avoid any disruption in care.”

Cigna said the following:

“Negotiations are moving forward in good faith with UNC Health to reach a fair and reasonable agreement for all.”
