GRIMES COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Highway 249 in Grimes County was closed Saturday morning after a deadly wrong-way crash involving three vehicles that left two people dead, Texas DPS said.
Investigators said a Ford SUV was traveling westbound when it veered into the eastbound lanes for an unknown reason, striking a Toyota SUV.
The Texas DPS reports that a second crash occurred when a Honda sedan traveling westbound collided with the Ford.
Sgt. Justin Ruiz with Texas DPS said the drivers of both SUVs were pronounced dead at the scene. He added that among the passengers in the Toyota, one was taken to the hospital by ambulance while the others drove themselves.
The exact number of people injured was unclear.
Investigators are working to determine why the Ford driver crossed into the opposite direction. Highway 249 had reopened by 9 a.m. Saturday.
