HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are investigating after they say two people died in a major crash in the Galleria area on Thursday.
The Houston Police Department said the deadly wreck happened just before 6 a.m. SkyEye flew over the scene on Westheimer at McCue, where a vehicle could be seen rolled over and heavily damaged along the ramp of the yellow parking lot.
Asst. Chief A. Rodriguez said a Jaguar 4-door sedan was going eastbound, lost control, and crashed at 5065 Westheimer.
HPD confirmed two people died, though they have not been identified.
Before the crash, Rodriguez said officers tried to stop a vehicle for running a red light nearby, near Winrock and Westheimer, but lost sight of it. Investigators said they’re now trying to determine if that vehicle is linked to the Jaguar involved in the crash.
“The description is similar, so we’re going to work out the details to make sure that this is in fact the vehicle from earlier, but we’re unsure if it is linked at this time,” the assistant chief added.
Officials are urging people to avoid the area and said the scene is expected to take hours to process.
“I don’t know the exact speed of the vehicle. It appears to be, from the way the scene looks, that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed,” Rodriguez said.
An investigation into the crash is underway.
