EAST OTIS, Mass. (WWLP) – Three locally owned gas stations in Massachusetts have earned national recognition in a new survey ranking the best independent fuel stops across the country.
The poll, conducted by American River Wellness, asked over 3,000 drivers to identify their favorite independent gas stations. While the last highlighted unique roadside stops from Texas to Hawaii, three Bay State businesses stood out for their character and community connection.
Papa’s Healthy Food & Fuel, located in East Otis, ranked No. 65 on the list. Located in the Berkshires, the family-run Gulf station doubles as a local food stop, offering groceries, seasonal produce, and hearty breakfasts. The station’s blend of fueling, auto service, and homemade meals has made it a hub for both travelers and residents.
Yo Boca Taco! in Wayland, ranked No. 83, has developed a cult following for its unexpected pairing of fuel and tacos. Owner KC Ueberroth transformed a traditional station into a taqueria destination, with breakfast tacos and burritos drawing rave reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor. Locals and visitors alike often remark that they come for gas but stay for the food.
Sherborn Fuel, ranked No. 99, represents small-town reliability on Route 16. The long-running CITGO station has served the community for decades, offering full-service fueling alongside a shop stocked with snacks and hot food. Residents say its independent ownership and familiar faces keep it an enduring neighborhood staple.
“The gas stations on this list have always been more than just a place to fill your tank — they’re community touchpoints,” said Graham Sargent of American River Wellness. “What stood out in our survey is how much people cherish the quirks: the family-run bakery counter, the handwritten specials, even the old pumps. These stations prove that personality and care can turn a quick stop into something unforgettable.”
The full list features 100 independent gas stations nationwide, with top honors going to Rumpy’s Bakery & Deli in Gainesville, Texas, known for its scratch-made fried pies.
