According to SPD, it added experienced investigators and resources to manage an increasing caseload. An investigations sergeant has also been appointed to oversee the operations of the cold case unit.
“This expansion demonstrates a dedicated commitment to justice, ensuring that every case, regardless of its age, receives the thorough investigation it deserves,” SPD said in part. “Every victim matters, and every family deserves answers. Our increased investment in the Cold Case Unit sends a clear message – we will pursue every available lead until we uncover the truth.”
SPD said it recently attended a meeting with families of cold case victims and other victims of violent crime. During the “emotional gathering,” department leadership and detectives provided case updates, listened to the families’ perspectives, and reaffirmed their shared mission to bring resolution and justice.
Currently, 10 cold cases have been submitted to the Department of Justice for processing, and an additional 16 cases are pending submission, according to SPD. Three other cold cases have been filed with the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.
SPD also announced a dedicated page on its website specifically for cold cases. The purpose is to provide in-depth information about cold cases and offer a platform for the public to assist the department in seeking answers and bringing closure to the families of the victims.
“Your involvement can make a significant difference in these ongoing investigations,” SPD said.
Detectives encouraged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously via Crime Stoppers and may be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000.
