FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — A North Carolina state trooper came under gunfire on Tuesday night during an attempted traffic stop in Fayetteville.
The trooper was not hit, but the Highway Patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets.
It unfolded when the trooper tried to stop a speeding vehicle on I-295, and someone in the car fired several gunshots, hitting the patrol vehicle, including the front bumper and the tires. The driver sped away.

The incident then spilled over to McArthur Road, where the trooper’s vehicle became disabled.
The Fayetteville Police Department and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
The search continues for the suspects. The Highway Patrol did not release specifics of the type of vehicle they are looking for, saying only that they are working several leads. The trooper told ABC11 that he clocked the car doing 82 mph in a 65 mph zone and that a person in the suspect vehicle started firing shots as soon as he activated his blue lights.
