Gazing into the cosmos, you may find yourself in awe of the innumerable stars scattered across the sky that span into the distance. One can only wonder about the origins of it all. On a less philosophical note, you could say the same about the Starburst weed strain. The origins of this cultivar have been in question for years, with multiple variations appearing seemingly out of nowhere. And though you may never get the answers you seek, you’ll have no trouble appreciating this extraordinary hybrid

The ILGM research team does its best to ensure information is accurate and up to date, but some details are still being discovered.

Starburst strain genetics

The genetics of this cultivar depends on where you buy your seeds/bud and who the breeder is. Without going into too much detail, here are some possible genetic combinations.

One of the most common blends to arise is Fire OG x Pre-98 Bubba Kush. Another one that shows up often is a cross of Tangerine and The Hook. One version, also named Pink Starburst OG, is a three-way cross of (DJ Short’s Blueberry x Headband) and Sour Diesel BX3. Another is a Lemon Larry OG and Nebula cross. Sources say the Starburst cultivar by Lupos Cannaseed comes from a Roadkill phenotype.

Is Starburst strain indica or sativa?

Although the assortment of Starburst strains on the market may all differ in some way or another, a commonality they all share is their sativa dominance. The exact ratio depends on the phenotype, but the average is 50 -70 % sativa. Though the original breeder remains a mystery, cannabis lore says it originated from Alaska.

Growing Starburst strain

According to online photos, the Starburst cannabis strain produces large, light green nuggets nested in a bed of slightly darker sugar leaves with a scattering of light peach hairs among the crystal trichomes. Considering its complicated genetics, grow info is understandably vague. The recommended growing conditions vary between phenotypes, but some details are consistent across versions.

Sources say Starburst averages a height between 3.5 ft and 7 ft and grows well indoors, outdoors, and in a greenhouse. Most growers recommend a warm and humid climate and say certain cultivars respond well to the Sea of Green (SOG) method. Growers say it has a standard resilience with some resistance to mold and bugs, and you’ll manage if you have experience and skill. If you’re a beginner grower, try one of these cultivars instead

As with any cannabis plant, you can be better prepared by researching your seeds and learning more about your particular cultivar.

Starburst strain flowering time

It’s around 8-10 weeks for most Starburst cultivars, but this can vary slightly depending on your phenotype. For instance, it can be less than 7 weeks for the Fire OG/Pre-98 Bubba Kush cross, while the Tangerine/The Hook blend can take up to 11 weeks.

Outdoors, some cultivars will be ready for harvest in early October, while others will be ready in mid-late October.

Starburst strain autoflowering time

The autoflowering version of Starburst, like most autoflowers, starts blooming very early. Because it doesn’t require light deprivation to start flowering, expect the first buds to appear after four to six weeks. Starburst autoflowers can be harvested after ten to fourteen weeks. That makes its (auto)flowering time between four and ten weeks long.

Starburst strain yield

The average yield of any cannabis plant depends on several factors, including the skill of the cultivator, growing conditions, strain genetics, and size and health of the plant. It also differs between photoperiod and autoflower plants. However, you can use general estimates as a potential yield per plant guideline.

For photoperiod plants, this is 16-64 ounces (450-1814 grams) outdoors and 8-24 ounces (227-680 grams) indoors.

Starburst strain autoflowering yield

The potential yield per plant for autoflowering plants is 1.7-7 ounces (50-200 grams) outdoors and 1.7-4.2 ounces (50-120 grams) indoors.

Starburst strain effects

Though the effects may vary depending on your Starburst strain indica to sativa ratio, most consumers say the high is mostly balanced with a slight sativa lean. You can look forward to feeling relaxed yet energized, with a sense of focus and upliftment that invokes creativity (and possibly giggles). Starburst offers an upbeat high that’s perfect for daytime consumption. Plus, it’s great for easing discomforts associated with stress, depression, anxiety, and persistent aches and pains. Its mood-lifting effects promote clear thought, while the calming effects can help with sleep problems.

While higher doses can cause paranoia or anxiety, the side effects are relatively mild for the most part. You can expect the usual cottonmouth, munchies, and possibly light dizziness and tingling sensations.

How strong is Starburst strain?

Some sources say Starburst (aka Starburst OG or Starburst Kush) has a THC level as low as 11%, while others say it can be as high as 33% (although this is unlikely). Due to the confusion around the origins of this strain, it’s best to consume cautiously, as you may never know what phenotype you may have.  Buying from a trusted supplier is the best way to ensure you get the potency you’re after.

Starburst strain terpenes

Dominant terpenes like b-myrcene, limonene, and pinene lend Starburst its earthy, citrus, and pine elements, respectively. Other terpenes found in this cultivar include b-caryophyllene, humulene, and bisabolol.

Aroma & Flavor

Although Starburst has more variants than a Star Wars film, strain reviews show a consensus: this cryptic hybrid’s layered flavor and pungency are out of this world. Its sweet and sour scent emits notes of citrus and fruits bundled in thick diesel and pine. Like the scent, its flavor resembles a sweet fruit roll-up dipped in spice and diesel
