SMUD customers left without power after crash in Citrus Heights

A car crash into a pole left hundreds of SMUD customers without power in Citrus Heights on Thursday night.

CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — A power outage in Citrus Heights was related to a car crashing into a pole Thursday evening. 

Before 8:30 p.m., 423 customers were affected in the outage, according to SMUD’s outage map. 

The Citrus Heights Police said officers responded to a call about a car crashing into a power pole on Sunrise Boulevard. The driver was conscious and was taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. 

SMUD de-energized the pole as safety precaution. Police didn’t confirm if the crash or de-energization directly led to the power outage.

Police said southbound and northbound traffic on Sunrise Boulevard is reduced to one lane for an unknown timeframe while SMUD crews work on damages. 

Police said DUI is suspected in the crash.
