Interstate 80 is completely open and more than 10 feet of snow fell at ski resorts, leaving people excited to hit the slopes.
NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — After feet of snow dumped over the Sierra Nevada, ski resorts are anticipating a busy weekend.
While some towns and residents are still digging out of last week’s powerful winter storm, Interstate 80 has completely reopened and 10 feet of snow fell at Boreal Mountain Resort, leaving people excited to hit the slopes.
“(There’s) a lot of fresh powder out there,” said snowboarder Christian Munoz. “We stayed an extra hour and a half.”
For some, it was a spontaneous trip up to catch the new snowfall. For others, like Savannah Bradley from Sacramento, it was a little different.
“This trip had already been planned. But with the storm I was like, ‘Oh, great. We have fresh snow,’” she said. “It was a lot more exciting.”
The anticipated busy weekend comes after I-80 was closed for the entire weekend due to blizzard conditions.
“It took a lot to come back from that storm,” said Tucker Norred, spokesperson for Boreal Mountain Resort. “This was the refresh we were waiting for, and we cannot wait for more snow to come in.”
He says the new snow adds to the other events they had scheduled for spring.
They aren’t the only ones expecting a busy weekend thanks to last week’s storm.
“We’re really looking forward to a busy couple of days,” said Janet Tuttle, owner of Donner Ski Ranch.
She says they got about 11 feet and are ready to be open instead of closed after getting so much snow.
“The storms that came through last year at this time (were) so much worse. We were closed for almost three weeks,” said Tuttle. “This one flew in for a few days and it was over and now… look forward to a nice weekend.”
Safety officials urging visitors if you are going to be driving to the sierra, slow down as the roads may be slick from melting snow.
Businesses recommend people get to resorts early to find parking and avoid long lines. Plus, remember to bring a lot of sunscreen.
