SHP: Man dead after driving in a no-passing zone, causing head-on crash in Knightdale neighborhood

One person is dead and two people were injured in a crash Saturday in Knightdale, according to State Highway Patrol.

Just after midnight, a witness told SHP that a Honda Civic driven by 19-year-old Jaime Valdez passed them in a no-passing zone near Bethlehem Road. As a result, Valdez struck a Ford van driven by 73-year-old Richard Varnum head-on.

Valdez was pronounced dead on the scene.

A State Highway Patrol trooper on the scene at Bethlehem Road and Moon Valley Lane told WRAL that two people were transported to WakeMed in stable condition. We are working to find out the conditions of Varnum and this other person.

SHP said this crash was a head-on collision caused by improper passing, speeding and careless and reckless driving. Impairment was not suspected as a factor in this crash.

SHP said no charges are expected to be filed.
