For the fourth straight year, Tempur-Pedic has gotten the highest marks among Americans who recently purchased a mattress, according to J.D. Power’s 2022 Mattress Satisfaction Report.
Shoppers gave that brand the highest marks in both the online and retail categories.
In order of importance, J.D. Power evaluated customer satisfaction with mattresses based on:
- Comfort
- Price
- Support
- Durability
- Warranty
- Variety of features
- Customer service
The companies included in the 2022 ranking that sell mattresses online and scored above average (871) for overall customer satisfaction are:
- Tempur-Pedic: Overall customer satisfaction score of 894 out of 1,000 points
- Casper: 886
- Purple: 884
- Sleep Number: 880
- Serta: 877
On a 1,000-point scale, these were mattress companies that sell in retail stores that scored above the average (862) for overall customer satisfaction:
- Tempur-Pedic: 905
- Sleep Number: 875
- Serta: 874
The report was based on responses from 2,030 people who had purchased a mattress in the prior 12 months.
How to buy the right mattress
The J.D. Power survey can give you great insights into choosing the right mattress. However, don’t stop there. The more you research mattresses and the companies that sell them, the more likely you are to make a good choice.
For example, you might want to choose a mattress store with a liberal return policy. As we have reported:
“Buy from a store that offers ‘comfort returns,’ meaning that you can return the mattress if you’re unhappy for any reason, though you may need to pay a fee. Before buying, understand exactly what a warranty covers and how the return policy works.”

Whatever you do, don’t cut corners when buying a mattress. You will sleep on the mattress every night, and your physical and emotional well-being depend on getting proper rest. So price should not be the sole factor when choosing a mattress.
