Shooting at Southern University and A&M College fraternity leaves several wounded

An overnight shooting at a fraternity house near Southern University and A&M College has left several people wounded, police said.

Gunfire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. Friday at the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity house on Harding Blvd., which is located just outside the Louisiana school’s campus entrance, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.

One person has been detained in connection with the shooting, but sources told WBZR they may not have been involved. It’s not clear whether authorities were still searching for a gunman.

The exact details of what prompted the violence remained unclear, but police officers and first responders remained outside the frat house hours after the gunshots first rang out.

Video taken from the scene shows metal barriers tipped over and red solo cups and trash strewn about the streets.

Most campus entrances have since reopened.

Police said nine people suffered apparent gunshot wounds, including seven who were transported to the hospital. Most of them appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries.

School officials have not yet commented on the overnight incident, and police said an investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Southern University and A&M College is a historically Black school located in Baton Rouge. It boasts a population of nearly 9,000 students.
