Search continues for 5-year-old swept into ocean in Big Sur

(KRON) — Rescuers continue to search for the missing 5-year-old girl who was swept out to sea by 15 to 20-foot waves at Garrapata State Beach in Big Sur Friday.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office temporarily called off the search around 9 p.m. yesterday due to weather and lighting. The search resumed Saturday morning.

“The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has re-established command of this multi-agency search which includes a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard,” the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said.

Drivers on Highway 1 are asked to avoid stopping at Garrapata State Beach while the search is ongoing.

The 5-year-old’s father died while trying to rescue her from the surf. An off-duty State Parks lifeguard pulled the man’s body from the water. The child was never found.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified the father as Yuji Hu, 39, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The girl’s mother was treated for mild hypothermia at the hospital. A 2-year-old child who was also at the beach was unharmed.
