‘Saw blades are not recyclable!’, Mecklenburg Co. recycling worker injured

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WCNC) – “Saw blades are not recyclable!”

Those are words you never expect to hear from a recycling center, but Mecklenburg County Recycling wants residents to hear them loud and clear after a close call at one of its facilities.

An employee was nearly struck with a saw blade at the Pence Road Material Recovery Facility in June. 

Officials are urging residents not to put any sharp or hazardous items in their curbside recycling bin. Check with your local recycling agency for specific guidance. 

Items that go in recycling:

  • Plastic Bottles
  • Tubs and Jugs
  • Jars with lids
  • Milk cartons
  • Drink bottles
  • Dairy containers
  • Dish Soap containers
  • Condiment containers
  • Glass Bottles and Jugs
  • Metal Cans
  • Paper, Cartons and Cardboard

Keep these items out of the recycling bin:

  • Aerosol cans
  • All batteries
  • Aluminum foil
  • Ceramic items
  • Clothing or textiles
  • Diapers
  • Electronics
  • Food-tainted items
  • Hazardous waste
  • Household glass
  • Medical waste
  • Plastic bags and wrap
  • Plastic cups, lids and straws
  • Scrap metal
  • Wood
  • Shredded paper

  • Tanglers [cords, hoses, wires, etc.]
