Safeway employee slashed with an axe trying to stop a shoplifter

Man is in custody for assaulting a Safeway employee with an axe.

WASHINGTON — A man is in custody for assaulting a grocery store employee with an axe. 

On Friday, Andrew Spielman entered a Safeway grocery store along Piney Branch Road just before 10 p.m. According to police, Spielman began placing multiple grocery items inside a backpack before being confronted by an employee. 

According to a police report, the two began arguing, and that led to them getting into a fight. Spielman then takes an axe and slashes the employee, leaving him with serious injuries.

The employee was taken to a hospital. As Spielman tried to leave, police stopped him and placed him under arrest.  Police recovered: ice cream, lemon bread, brisket, round roast, milk, and other groceries, totaling over $100. 

Spielman is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and shoplifting.
