There’s a new prime minister in the United Kingdom — again.
Rishi Sunak on Monday became the third person to hold the role this year after winning his bid for leader of the Conservative Party.
He replaces Liz Truss, who quit last week after just 45 days in office after abruptly cancelling her economic proposals.
Former prime minister Boris Johnson, who exited the position amid scandal over the summer, ended his comeback efforts Sunday after campaigning for support from Conservative lawmakers over the weekend.
That left Sunak with a final opponent in Penny Mordaunt, who withdrew from the race Monday.
Sunak, 42, becomes the first person of color to lead Britain. He was previously the U.K.’s chief secretary to the treasury from 2019-20 and its chancellor of the exchequer from 2020 until earlier this year.
“There will be integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level of the government I lead and I will work day in and day out to get the job done,” Sunak said Sunday.
