Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released on Netflix on Friday, December 23, giving subscribers an early festive treat.

The film, a sequel to 2019’s Knives Out, follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he is invited to a murder mystery party at the private island of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). There he meets Miles’ friends, like politician Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), and model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson).

But things quickly take a more grisly turn during the festivities, and it is up to the detective to solve the case before it’s too late. Now the film is available around the globe, fans of the Knives Out franchise may be wondering what’s next.

Director Rian Johnson told Newsweek of his plans for the future, and what he is keen to do with the third installment.

Netflix bought the rights to a second and third Knives Out film for $450 million in March 2021, Variety reported at the time, meaning that after Glass Onion fans need not be concerned about there not being another film.

Fans of the franchise will be able to return to the world of Benoit Blanc in a third film, though it has not yet been revealed exactly when that will be released.

Johnson, however, shared an update on the next film while speaking with Newsweek about Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

“I’m just starting to think about it right now,” Johnson said of the third film. “[I’m] just starting to put together and kind of figure out what would be exciting, figure out what would feel scary in the right way.

“Like what would be something that also will be completely different from this movie? The way that this movie was different from the first one.

“That, to me, is the whole reason, the notion of doing more of these feels exciting is that they can truly be something new every time.”

This certainly makes sense as Johnson is inspired by iconic crime writers like Agatha Christie, whose famous sleuths Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple always had a new cast to hand that was completely different to the last.

What is certain is that Daniel Craig will be returning as Benoit Blanc, as Netflix’s deal in March 2021 was for the actor to reunite with Johnson and reprise his role in a further two films after Knives Out.
