A deadly crash involving a retired Raleigh police sergeant closed westbound lanes of I-540 near Knightdale Boulevard in Wake County on Friday night. The lanes reopened Saturday morning.
Retired Sergeant Kenneth Hopkins, 55, was struck and killed by a car on the interstate near Lynnwood Road. He was trying to fix his trailer when the accident happened.
The Raleigh Police Department announced his death and praised him for his dedicated service as a police officer and Marine Corps veteran.
The department released a statement saying:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Sergeant Hopkins, a true pillar of our community. He served with honor and dedication, and his commitment continued beyond his retirement through his work as a youth mentor. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. We will support each other as we grieve and heal together.”
The Knightdale Police Department is currently investigating the cause of the accident.
