SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Residents in San Francisco’s Richmond District are facing a new challenge after Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) installed generators in response to last weekend’s power outage, impacting more than 130,000 customers.

While PG&E restored power by Tuesday morning, the noise from these generators has become unbearable for some neighbors, as they operate continuously, day and night.
Vahid Sattary, a local resident, reported that the generator noise peaked at 100 decibels, making it difficult to hold a conversation. He noted, “This is so loud you cannot have a simple conversation,” expressing frustration over the disturbance.

Mi Zhou, another resident near the generators, stated that he and his wife opted for a hotel provided by PG&E after experiencing the outage. Zhou mentioned that he is primarily concerned about the duration of the generator operation, saying, “We are more concerned about when this will be ended.”

Residents have attempted to reach PG&E multiple times to express their concerns. Sattary recounted, “We called PG&E hotline to talk to several people. They took notes and said someone will contact us. No follow through.”
Noise from the generators has severely impacted residents’ sleep, with Sattary describing the ongoing struggle: “For five nights, we have not been able to sleep. I don’t want to dilute, but PG&E has been unresponsive. They have not been good neighbors to us. I don’t know what to do.”
PG&E has not provided a specific timeline for when the generators will be removed, stating they will remain in place as long as necessary for repairs at the substation. Residents can expect the generators to operate at least through the weekend and PG&E has indicated they will address concerns on a case-by-case basis.
