Republic FC fans stay proud despite 1-0 loss in Jägermeister Cup final

Thousands attended the sold-out match at Heart Health Park.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Republic FC fans packed Heart Health Park on Friday night, hoping to watch their team make history. A win would have made the Republic the USL Championship’s first Jägermeister Cup champions.

Instead, the night ended in heartbreak. The Republic fell 1-0 to Hartford Athletic, leaving fans disappointed but still proud of their team and the season’s energy.

“We’re hoping for a big Republic win,” said fan Dave O’Toole before the match. “It’s going to be a big night.”

Another fan, Hugo Sanchez, shared similar optimism: “We got to get a win. We won last on Wednesday and we’re going to get a win today.”

But as minutes passed and opportunities slipped away, the cheers turned into frustration and boos. Season ticket holder Jason Grant, who’s supported the team since 2015, said he was proud of the turnout in the stands, but wished for a stronger showing on the field.

“They’re playing on their half way too much tonight,” Grant said. Still, he added, “Our fans showed up, sold-out game—it’s amazing.”

Even younger fans kept their spirits up.

“This is really fun. I think they played really hard, and they really did,” said 13-year-old Chase Hemsworth. “Keep cheering on for Sac Republic, regardless of the results.”

Grant said the night reminded him of how strong Sacramento’s soccer community is and what it could one day be.

“We want to take soccer to the main stage,” Grant said. “If you’re not watching this game and you don’t know about soccer in Sacramento, you are missing out.”
