Red Sox beat Yankees in first game of the American League Wild Card Series

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have a long-standing rivalry, and Tuesday night they faced off in the first game of the American League Wild Card Series. The Red Sox took game one in New York.

For the sixth time in postseason history, the Yankees and Red Sox squared off in the wild-card series, a best-of-three at Yankee Stadium. “It’s going to be a good game. Low scoring and hope the Sox pull it out,” said Rick Renkie of Chicopee.

And they sure did. The final score was Red Sox 3, Yankees 1.

MGM Springfield was busy all day as visitors put serious cash on the outcome of this game or specific plays.

“You can definitely feel the vibe, the competition. We have Yankees fans, we have Red Sox fans,” said MGM Springfield Director of Public Affairs, Beth Ward.

“I’m placing bets because the Red Sox have dominated the Yankees all year,” said Paul Thibault of Westfield.

The Red Sox were 9- 4 against the Yankees during the regular season. The last time the Red Sox made the playoffs was in 202,1 and came close to reaching the World Series. Now, fans are hoping to see them do it this time around.

Red Sox fans were banking on players like Garret Crochet to come through for his first-ever postseason start. And the left-hander did just that, striking out 11 in 7 and two-thirds innings.

“He’s been resting, so he’s probably pitching on six days’ rest. He’ll really do a fine job,” said Renkie.

“But crochet with Bello, I think that they have a really good chance of, you know, whoever, and they’ve got some good young arms rookies. And I like what I see from them, and I can’t wait to see what they can do in the playoffs,” added Thibault.

The Yankees had their ace on the mound, Max Fried, who is no stranger to the playoffs. The winner of this series will move on to play the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series on Saturday.

Game two is Wednesday, at 6 PM. Game three, if necessary, will be this Thursday.
