Centerport, L.I.: The results of the free and fair election are tallied. Not all true Republicans won. Election deniers, or the Party of Trump, won some government leadership positions. As it should be in a democracy, this is what the people want. However, election deniers in government leadership positions are a threat to democracy. It could be a warning of more truth-bending conspiracies in the future.

According to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, “there are no facts, only interpretations.” People view good and evil differently. Honor and disgrace are subjective. Nevertheless, an independent, peaceful society of the many must not be oppressed by the divisive words of the few. History proves that dignity and devotion to civility matter for a society to flourish in peace. This election wasn’t a full victory for the Trump Party. Maybe there is hope for decency.

With Thanksgiving approaching, let’s remember that Republican Abraham Lincoln once hoped people would unite during Thanksgiving “with one heart and one voice” to “heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it…to full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.”

May his words resonate as we, as a nation, strive for peace and unity. Pete Scott

Kew Gardens Hills: When I went to vote on Election Day, I carefully examined the ballot I was given to see if, as Democrats have been saying for months, “democracy is on the ballot.” I did not actually find democracy on the ballot, but it was clearly present in the room. American citizens of all walks of life, of different nationalities, different religions, different sexual orientations, different races and different political affiliations were proudly exercising their G-d-given right to vote. Barry Koppel

Whitestone: Bill Maher, a.k.a. Chicken Little, was wrong with his pessimistic election predictions for Democrats. Contrary to Maher’s doomsday warnings, the sky is not falling for Democrats and democracy. His know-it-all proclamations now look pretty silly. The majority of voters denied Donald Trump his promised red wave. There was none, the election deniers were rejected and the Democrats still have a chance to keep the majority in the Senate. Trump’s chances of returning to the White House in 2024 are gone, and he won’t have enough Republican voters in his cult to force candidates to pay him homage or lose their seats. The American people have voted to protect democracy. Michael J. Gorman

Larchmont, N.Y.: So much for the big red wave. By the time it hit the beach, it was barely a ripple. Maybe now, the once-proud Republican Party will realize they are infected with a cancerous tumor and the only treatment is a radical Trumpectomy! Steve Michaud

Brooklyn: The governor’s election showed women of New York City choosing the right to abort their own fetuses over protection against being assaulted, stabbed or murdered, occurrences that are happening every day in the Big Apple. David DiBello

Hubertus, Wisc.: One can plainly see that on Election Day 2022, we passed the point of no return in our collective march toward socialism and communism. No matter who brought up the talking points of a failing economy, rampant crime and energy policies bringing us into a Fourth World status, it is now terribly obvious that the American people care nothing about these issues. They are more than willing to turn over their paychecks and their and their children’s futures to feckless government hacks. I will continue to stand by true American ideals, but now being in the minority, I too will fade away, leaving all to the misfortune of their actions. I am happy to be the age that I am. I will not be here to witness the self-inflicted downfall of a once-great institution called the United States of America. Robert W. Lobenstein

Manhattan: The future will ask each of us: What did you do during the Donald Trump-corrupted GOP’s war against democracy? For seven decades plus, I’ve gratefully enjoyed both the joys and challenges of the assumed guarantee of living pretty freely in our now-246-year-old democracy just as I am, a lifelong centrist independent and self-determined free spirit. That guarantee and my optimism have now been seriously upset by the lingering, traumatic stench of the traitorous, anarchic phenomenon of autocratic Trumpism. With few principled exceptions, that swampy MAGA stench has permeated virtually the whole pitiful un-American Tea-rumplican Party — a lost, soulless, self-serving, limiting lot that totally obliterates popular will and needs. Democratic leadership has restored much dignity, fairness and thoughtful intelligence to our atmosphere, as well as proposed or passed great measures that benefit all Americans, and accomplished so much despite the do-nothing-good GOP’s total obstruction. Be shocked, but not surprised, when autocracy soon storms through each of our doors. Phil Vanaria

Weekdays

Catch up on the day’s top five stories every weekday afternoon.

Yonkers: Now that Kathy Hochul remains governor of New York, democracy is safe for another few years, according to the Democrats’ think tanks. Thus, criminals will be able to explore and exploit their craft in the least restrictive environment, fare-evaders will continue to ride the transit system for free and the homeless and mentally ill will abound in the subways, on park benches and in doorways around the city. The incentives for law-abiders to relocate are becoming more attractive by the day. New York City was once the city that never sleeps. Now it’s becoming the city that won’t fight crime. Frank Brady

Saugerties, N.Y.: Some Hudson Valley politicians are saying that violent crime is increasing — right in our backyards. Well, it’s true. I looked out at my backyard this morning and saw two clothespins holding up a pair of pants. Timothy Trossen

Bronx: The stupidity of the common criminal knows no bounds (”Man hit with drinking in subway caught with gun, tied to assault,” Oct. 27), no doubt emboldened by the moronic decision of the city’s previous administration not to enforce minor violations in the transit system. Three gun arrests in eight days would be great news if not for the laughable no-cash bail policy of the current administration. Stupid is as stupid does, all the way around. Joe Schulok

Brooklyn: To Voicer Mark A. Peter: I would like to inform you that this is 2022. Our country is comprised of people of many religions and no religion. This is not 1776. “Christian worldview” is no longer the precedent. Religion should have no place in or bearing on government or politics. But, since you brought it up, I really got a good laugh at your statement that “the Republican Party and its candidates most closely reflect a biblical worldview.” You must be kidding! Lying, cheating, racism, misogyny, adultery, homophobia, abuse, “pro-birth” — I can go on! These are the building blocks of the new GOP! Let’s not forget the hypocritical “Christian ethics.” I don’t know what your church and bible teach, but the Republican creed is far from Christian. Susan A. Cassano

Manhattan: Not to defend Kyrie Irving’s comments, but why is it we are tougher on athletes, broadcasters and actors when they make racist, homophobic or anti-Semitic comments than we are on politicians and Fox News hosts? Edward Drossman

Malverne, L.I.: Daylight Saving Time was created to add an extra hour of daylight in the evening, save on energy costs and conduct more outdoor activities. However, with LED lights, electricity use is not as expensive as it was a couple of generations ago and candle use (the prevalent way to light our lives during Benjamin Franklin’s life, when he made his argument for daylight savings) became obsolete with the invention of the fluorescent light bulb. Kosmas Patikoglou

Manhattan: To Voicer Sam Katz: Voicer Fred Schoeneborn is, in fact, correct about the Constitution. It says nothing about abortion. The Supreme Court voted the way it did because the “right to an abortion” is an interpretation of the Ninth, 13th and 14th Amendments. It is not law. If you want this particular guarantee, write a new amendment for it. Elizabeth Rodriguez
