Happy Birthday to Queen Sonja of Norway, who turns 89 today! The artistic commoner who became the first Norwegian-born Queen of Norway, Queen Sonja’s jewellery collection has a nice mix of heirloom jewels and modern acquisitions, which includes Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Flower Brooch!

The exact origin of the Diamond Flower Brooch is not known but it may have been acquired by the then Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, at some point in the late-1800s, likely from a London jeweller. The Flower depicts either an Orchid or Jasmine.
The Princess of Wales most notably wore the Diamond Flower Brooch on her shoulder for the Wedding of her nephew, Prince Carl of Denmark, to her daughter, Princess Maud of Wales, later the King and Queen of Norway, in 1896.
After Queen Alexandra’s death in 1925, the Diamond Flower Brooch could have been inherited by her daughter, Queen Maud of Norway, or her sister Princess Victoria, who would have left to her nephew, Crown Prince Olav of Norway.
However, it wasn’t until the early 1970s when the then Crown Princess Sonja began wearing Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Flower Brooch, with a notable appearance during Princess Anne’s visit to Norway in 1971, with the Princess wearing Queen Alexandra’s Edwardian Choker.
Over the years, Crown Princess and later Queen Sonja wore Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Flower Brooch in several configurations, separating the Flower from the stems and also often wearing the Diamond Flower in her hair.
More recently, Queen Sonja has worn Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Flower Brooch for several Nobel Banquets and also in her hair for her 80th Birthday Gala in 2017. Lets hope we see the Brooch worn again soon!
