Propane tank explosion wreaks havoc at SE Portland food cart pod

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An explosion at a Southeast Portland food cart pod damaged several carts as well as buildings, Portland Fire & Rescue said.

Early Tuesday morning, Portland Fire responded to the food cart pod on Southeast 82nd Avenue.

According to officials, a food cart exploded, damaging seven other food carts as well as two permanent buildings.

Fire officials said that crews responded quickly and extinguished any remaining flames at the scene.

Authorities said the initial investigation shows that the explosion was caused by a propane tank and is believed to be accidental.

A leak in a propane tank trapped gas inside the cart and eventually reached an ignition source, causing the cart to explode, officials said.

Material from the exploding car hit the nearby carts and buildings.
