A pro-gun message that was spray-painted onto a landmark on the Michigan State University campus days after a shooting left three students dead and five wounded in critical condition has been painted over.
Following Monday’s shooting, the phrase “How many more? Stay safe, MSU” was painted onto The Rock, a boulder on the Lansing campus that is commonly used to spread messages and has become an impromptu vigil site for the victims, with flowers candles and other items appearing along with the messages.
However, sometime before Wednesday morning, a pro-gun message was painted onto The Rock: “Allow us to defend ourselves & carry on campus.”
By Wednesday afternoon, the monument had once again been repainted to read “To those we lost, to those healing, Brian, Arielle, Alexandria,” a reference to Brian Fraser, Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner, the three students who were killed in the shooting.
According to WILX, it’s unclear who repainted The Rock in the first place. Up North Live reported that two female students arrived separately with the intention of replacing the pro-gun message with one in support of the victims.
A vigil is scheduled to be held at The Rock at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
In response to the shooting, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered all U.S. and state flags on public grounds in the state — including those on the MSU campus — to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday until further notice.
