PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man has died weeks after he was seriously injured in an e-scooter crash in Southeast Portland caused by a pothole, police announced Friday.
The original incident happened on Aug. 18, when 45-year-old Randy Lee Phelps was riding an e-scooter in the area of Southeast 52nd Avenue and Mitchell Street.
Phelps hit a pothole in the street, then fell and severely injured his head, according to officials.
Police said he was taken to a hospital, but died from his injuries on Sept. 11.
According to PPB, only medical personnel responded to the incident at the time. But after learning about the crash, police said the case met their criteria for a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash.
As a result, officials said this marks the 30th fatal crash in the city.
