(KRON) — Union City police have launched an attempted kidnapping investigation after a man grabbed an 11-year-old girl on her way to school.
The girl was riding her scooter to Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School around 8 a.m. Wednesday. When the girl reached the area of Dyer Street and Meteor Drive, a masked man suddenly approached, grabbed the girl’s sweatshirt hood, and attempted to pull her, police said.
The Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School student was able to escape. “The victim managed to get away. The victim informed school staff, who promptly notified the Union City Police Department,” police wrote.
“The victim was not injured, and the suspect’s intent remains unknown at this time,” UCPD wrote.
Police said the man was described as a tall and heavy-set. He was wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up and a mask covering his face.

Union City police officers are canvassing the area and reviewing potential surveillance footage.
