Greenbelt Police say they plan to release the bodyworn camera footage at some point Monday.
GREENBELT, Md. — Police have arrested two teens in connection to a shooting in Greenbelt that left five people injured, including two kids. Investigators say the day began as an unsanctioned senior skip day for students across multiple high schools in the area.
A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old were identified as suspects with the help of witnesses, according to police. Both teens were taken into custody on Monday in connection to the shooting at Schrom Hills Park on April 19. Police believe there were only two shooters.
Currently, investigators say all the shooting victims have been released from area hospitals.
“Our young people deserve a future free from violence and it is our responsibility as grown-ups to show them the way,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said Monday at a press conference.
The Greenbelt City manager also responded to the events and elaborated on what efforts will be made in order to keep the public safe.
“In response to this event, we’re speeding up a few safety enhancements planned as part of the public safety strategy,” Josué Salmerón said.
Those measures include deploying public safety cameras and mplementing license plate readers throughout the city.
“We will continue to make investments to social services, recreational services, and crisis intervention team,” Salmerón said.
Body-worn camera footage of the incident was released via the Greenbelt Police Facebook page Monday afternoon. Viewer discretion is advised.
Melissa Hubbard, a mother of two visits the park often. She questions how teens are getting their hands on firearms.
“It worries me, because where are they getting them from? Where are they getting guns? The school?” Melissa Hubbard said.
Josue Salmeron, Greenbelt City Manager told WUSA9 they’ve already installed mobile cameras in the park.
License plate readers are also in the works. It’ll help with tracking stolen vehicles in the city, another major issue.
“We have a 14 and 16-year-old engaging in these activities. It’s shocking, we have children that have access to guns and are shooting at people.” Salmeron said. “We can’t have officers everywhere so we’re leveraging technology to improve our monitoring and surveillance of the city.”
The two teens will be charged as adults, they’re facing a list of charges, including, attempted homicide.
