With one word, Pink showed her support for Britney Spears amid the latter pop star’s struggles.
While performing her song “Don’t Let Me Get Me” at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Wednesday, Pink sang, “Tired of being compared to sweet Britney Spears / She’s so pretty / That just ain’t me,” as seen in fan video from the concert.
In the original version of the 2001 song, Pink sang about “damn Britney Spears.”
Concertgoers at Wednesday’s show celebrated the change with “awws” and cheers.
Pink previously shared her love for Spears in a People interview this February as she reflected on co-starring with her in Pepsi’s 2004 Super Bowl commercial.
“I’ve always felt like a big sister to her, even though people think that line in ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me’ was picking on Britney Spears,” the 43-year-old said. “Actually, I was very supportive in Britney’s life, and she was always carrying around one of my CDs. Like, I’m very protective of her, and she’s the sweetest person in the world . And [what] sort of solidified my protector-like, big sister deal was being with her then and seeing who her team was and meeting her parents. Yeah, I just love that girl.”
Pink’s lyric change at the Detroit concert came the same day Entertainment Tonight reported that Sam Asghari had filed for divorce from Spears after one year of marriage. Asghari confirmed the split in an Instagram Stories update the following day. “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,” he said. “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.”
Spears was only recently freed from a 13-year conservatorship, which fans rallied against with the #FreeBritney movement. A judge ended the conservatorship — which granted legal control over her life to her father, James P. Spears — in November 2022 after the singer said she’d been traumatized by what she called an abusive arrangement.
