Pigs ran loose along Interstate 80 in Placer County after truck overturns, snarling traffic
AUDIO ISSUES WITH MELANIE, SO MAYBE WE CAN GET THAT FIXED. BUT WE’RE GOING TO KEEP A LOOK AT THIS LIVE SHOT HERE. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU KNOW, MIKE, WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THIS MORNING IS, YOU KNOW WE KNOW THIS IS THE TOP OF THE TRAILER WHERE THEY CUT THAT OPEN TO GET THE PIGS OUT. THEY’VE BEEN CORRALLING THESE PIGS, AT LEAST THE ONES WHO CAN MAKE IT OUT OF THE TRAILER. FOR MORE ON THIS, LET’S GO RIGHT BACK OUT TO MELANIE WINGO. MELANIE. ALL RIGHT. SORRY ABOUT THAT MICROPHONE ISSUE THERE FOR JUST A MOMENT, GUYS. SO YEAH, WHAT WE’RE SEEING IN THE LAST HALF HOUR IS HOW CHP, CALTRANS, SOME TOW TRUCK DRIVERS, THE PLACER COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES, THEY’RE ALL WORKING IN TANDEM TRYING TO FASHION A RAMP TO HELP ASSIST, GET THESE PIGGIES FROM THE OVERTURNED TRAILER ONTO A SECONDARY VEHICLE THAT IS A TRIPLE DECKER TRAILER HERE. AND THEY’RE GOING TO TRY TO GET THOSE PIGS INTO A LOCATION WHERE THEY CAN BRING THEM TO SAFETY. SOME OF THE PIGS ARE KIND OF STUBBORN HERE. THEY’RE NOT WANTING TO GO UP THE RAMP. THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT. THE TRUCK OVERTURNED AROUND 1130 LAST NIGHT. THE TRUCK’S BEEN ON ITS SIDE EVER SINCE. AND ALL THESE PIGS HAVE BEEN KIND OF HELD UP INSIDE THAT TRAILER FOR A BIT. SO NOW YOU CAN SEE THIS ONE IS BACKING DOWN THE RAMP. WE DID SEE ONE SUCCESSFULLY GET ON THE TRUCK, BUT YET IT IS NOT AN EASY TASK TO TRY TO CORRAL THESE ANIMALS AND GET THEM ONTO THE SECONDARY VEHICLE. BUT THEY’RE ALSO FASHIONING A DIFFERENT A COUPLE DIFFERENT ITERATIONS OF THIS RAMP. THE FIRST ONE THAT THEY TRIED WAS NOT STABLE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE THE WEIGHT OF THE PIGS. AND THEN WE HAVE SOME TEMPORARY FENCING THAT WAS BROUGHT IN BY CHP AND ANIMAL CONTROL. AND THEN THEY HAVE THESE RED PARTITIONS THAT THEY ARE FASHIONING HERE TO TRY TO KEEP THE ANIMALS IN PLACE. AGAIN, THIS IS SUCH A ROUGH JOB FOR, FOR THE THE FOLKS HAVING TO DEAL WITH IT. OH, BOY. IT LOOKS LIKE WE’VE GOT A SITUATION HERE. MASON, DO YOU WANT TO COME ON UP THIS WAY? YEAH, IT’S IT’S IT’S TRAUMATIZING. AS YOU CAN TELL FROM THE ANIMALS STANDPOINT, OR SO IT WOULD SEEM, THAT THEY’RE UNSURE OF WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. AND THEY’RE, YOU KNOW, BEING KIND OF HERDED UP ONTO THIS SECONDARY VEHICLE. ALL OF THIS IS SUCH A MAJOR JOB FOR ALL OF THESE CREWS TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH. SO WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR EVERYTHING THAT’S GOING ON OUT HERE AND LET YOU KNOW WHEN THEY HAVE IT CLEARED. BUT THEY CAN’T OPEN INTERSTATE 80 IN THE WESTBOUND DIRECTION NEAR COLFAX UNTIL THEY GET THIS FULLY CLEARED. SO FOR RIGHT NOW, IT IS JUST TBD AS TO WHEN ALL OF THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. NOT ONLY DO THEY HAVE TO GET THE ANIMALS TO SAFETY, BUT THEN THEY HAVE TO CLEAR THE TRUCK, RIGHT IT, AND THEN CLEAR ALL THE DEBRIS LIKE THE BROKEN GUARDRAIL HERE THAT’S OUT HERE. SO A LOT TO BE DONE OUT HERE, BRANDI AND MIKE. AND OF COURSE, WE’RE DEALING WITH LIVE ANIMALS WHO’VE BEEN THROUGH A LOT. AND IT IT’S, YOU KNOW, UNCLEAR WHEN ALL OF THIS IS GOING TO BE CLEARED. BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO TRACK THE DEVELOPMENTS OUT HERE AND BRING YOU UP TO SPEED AS SOON AS WE GET MORE INFORMATION BACK TO YOU. JUST

Westbound Interstate 80 lanes in Placer County are shut down after a big rig carrying pigs overturned, resulting in some of the swine running loose before being corralled.Traffic going westbound is being taken off I-80 at Secret Town Road to allow for traffic to start flowing again. As of 6 a.m., KCRA 3’s Melanie Wingo observed that there were still pigs inside the trailer.Crews are working to get those pigs out of the trailer, a California Highway Patrol officer said crews will have to cut into the trailer to release more pigs out of the trailer. Originally, the intention was to upright the trailer, but crews determined it was too heavy to do so with all of the pigs still inside.Shortly after 7 a.m., a handful of pigs were seen being let out of the trailer, but it is unknown how many are inside in total. Around 8 a.m., crews could be seen trying to load the pigs onto a trailer that had arrived to haul the animals away.Placer County Animal Services is also at the scene, and one of its vehicles has at least five of the pigs that ran loose loaded onboard. While traffic is being diverted to help traffic flow, motorists should consider alternate routes while crews are still clearing up the scene.
