The lockdown at the Naval Academy was lifted overnight. Investigation is now underway.
WASHINGTON — A person was hospitalized after a shooting at the Naval Academy in Annapolis on Thursday evening.
The lockdown was lifted shortly after midnight on Friday. Officials say an investigation is now underway.
According to a spokesperson from Naval Support Activity Annapolis, the lockdown was initiated was in connection to threats made to the school.
Previous reporting before the lockdown was lifted:
“Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, is currently responding to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy,” said LT Naweed Lemar.
Our crew is at the scene gathering information. Here’s what we’re hearing: a false alert came in saying an active shooter was on the campus dressed as a cop. When real cops encountered a midshipman in a dorm, he allegedly acted on the false reports and attacked the officer. The officer then fired a shot, hitting the midshipman in the shoulder.
The victim is expected to live. This is coming from two sources on the ground.
Just after 9 p.m., the Navy Academy released the following statement:
“At 5:07 PM EST, Naval Support Activity Annapolis security, in coordination with local law enforcement, responded to reports of suspicious activity on the Naval Academy grounds. There is no active shooter threat, however one person was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building. One person has been medevaced with injuries. They are in stable condition. We will provide updates as they become available.”
Police were near Bancroft Hall, which houses midshipmen in its more than 1,600 dorm rooms. It is considered the biggest single college dormitory in the world, according to the school’s website. The Thursday lockdown was lifted shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday, more than 7 hours after it was issued.
