What Is The Best Fertilizer for Annuals?

    [ad_1]

We always want to get the best out of our plants. When they’re not in bloom, we want great foliage; when they flower, we want the biggest and brightest blooms.

Even with produce, we want them to be big and full of flavor. This is why we fertilize our plants regardless of whether they’re in a pot or the ground.

    Best Fertilizer for AnnualsPin

But with so many fertilizer choices out there, how do you know which one to use?

    Best Fertilizer For Annuals

Choosing the best fertilizer for your annual isn’t difficult, but it takes some consideration.

Here’s everything you need to know to choose the best possible fertilizer for any annual plant.

Warning: There Isn’t A One-Type Fits All Answer

Plants are like people: no two are exactly the same, and their heritage can play a big role in their nutritional needs.

This is why you can’t just use the same fertilizer for every plant.

We’re presenting a way to make an educated choice in the type of fertilizer you buy, but the exact NPK ratio and dosages will require you to do a little research on each plant to find out its specific needs.

    Understanding NPK

On every package of fertilizer, you’ll find a series of three numbers. These numbers are known as the NPK and tell how much nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is present in the fertilizer.

These three nutrients are the heart of plant nutrition, and while all are needed for general health, each has its own special benefits.

    • Nitrogen is essential for healthy foliage and will encourage new stems and leaves.
    • Phosphorus is essential for healthy blooms.
    • Potassium ensures strong stems and boosts the plant’s immune system.

These three nutrients are often balanced, such as 10-10-10, while some may be high in nitrogen (ex: 4-2-2), phosphorus, or potassium.

There are even fertilizers that only provide one nutrient, such as a 4-0-0 nitrogen fertilizer that’s most often used for lawns.

It’s important to know the exact NPK ratio your plant needs, as some species or even cultivars can differ slightly compared to their close relatives.

When in doubt, people often stick to a balanced fertilizer, but this isn’t always the best option.

Another consideration is that you can also often begin with higher nitrogen fertilizer in spring and switch to a high phosphorus recipe when bloom time nears to get the most out of your plant.

    Other Important Nutrients

But nitrogen is just one of many nutrients your fertilizer should contain. It can be difficult to find what other micro and macronutrients are present because they aren’t considered important.

    These nutrients include:

    • Boron
    • Calcium
    • Copper
    • Iron
    • Magnesium
    • Manganese
    • Molybdenum
    • Sulfur
    • Zinc

Note that only trace amounts of these nutrients are necessary, so the exact amounts aren’t usually given. In most cases, these additional nutrients will be listed on the back or side of the package.

    Liquid Soluble vs. Slow-Release

This is one of the great ongoing debates among plant enthusiasts.

Slow-release granules break down over a longer time, meaning you don’t have to apply them as often.

However, the nutrients contained within break down at different rates, meaning your plant won’t be getting the same balance of nutrition throughout the period between applications.

Meanwhile, liquid-soluble fertilizers can be given when it’s time to water the plant, and the nutrients are immediately available to your plant in an easily absorbed form.

You will need to apply these fertilizers more often, but diluting them to specific percentage strengths is much easier, allowing you far more flexibility.

    Organic vs. Synthetic

This is another sticking point for a lot of plant enthusiasts.

Synthetic fertilizers can be stored for years, and some can even be stored indefinitely. However, there are a few drawbacks to using them.

Synthetics have a higher chance of causing chemical burns if they come in contact with your plant.

They can also leave behind more mineral salts, eventually making the soil toxic if not flushed out occasionally.

Finally, it’s not as easy to absorb as organic fertilizers, so the effects are slightly weakened (although this difference can often be too small to notice in an annual plant).

However, this doesn’t mean synthetic fertilizers don’t have their uses, and when used properly, they can still produce great results.

Organic fertilizers are quite different. Some organic options out there have a shelf life of several years when properly stored.

They closely mimic how the soil absorbs nutrients in nature, meaning they’re more easily absorbed by your plants and have a smaller chance of causing burns if it comes in contact with the plant.

Of course, you can also make many types of organic fertilizers at home, which can save money or address specific nutritional deficiencies.

A Few Recommended Fertilizer Brands For Annuals

Finally, let’s take a look at a few brands on the market that are known to be good quality.

It’s important that you never buy cheap fertilizer from a company that doesn’t have a great reputation.

These companies usually save money by cutting corners, and the fertilizer will likely be poor quality or have a drastically reduced shelf life.

All three of the following brands are well-known for their quality, affordability, and ability to use their products on both indoor and outdoor plants.

Miracle-Gro is one of the most trusted names in plant care. They offer a huge range of plant foods balanced for specific types of plants, such as a wonderful liquid-soluble rose food.

Both organic and synthetic options are available.

Another popular brand is Jobe’s Organics, sometimes a little more expensive than Miracle-Gro. What makes this brand great is that all of its fertilizers are 100% percent organic.

They offer both slow-release and liquid-soluble options for a wide range of plants, from the smallest houseplants to citrus trees.

A third option is Osmocote, made by the same company that makes Miracle-Gro.

Osmocote offers a handful of slow-release fertilizers that use a special coating to help regulate nutrient release.

This innovation helps to eliminate one of the biggest problems with slow-release fertilizers, making it a great choice for those who are often on the go and need something that lasts longer.

Rachel Zegler Says She Joined the DCEU and ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Because She “Needed a Job”

    [ad_1]

Rachel Zegler is getting candid about the real reason she joined the DC Universe and it’s quite relatable.

While talking with The Hollywood Reporter at the Shazam! Fury of the Gods premiere Tuesday, the West Side Story actress said she stepped into the role of Anthea because she “needed a job. I’m being so serious.”

“The reality is we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I was not working and I couldn’t get a job for the life of me, because West Side Story hadn’t come out yet,” she confessed. “It was really hard to book work for me.”

The David F. Sandberg-directed sequel follows Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his fellow foster children as they continue to navigate being teens along with their adult superhero alter egos. Only this time, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, daughters of Atlas — Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), Anthea (Zegler), have come to earth to search for the magic that was previously stolen from them. Shazam (Zachary Levi), Billy’s adult superhero persona, must team up with his allies to save the world.

Zegler went on to explain how excited she was when she first learned about the role and then eventually landed the part. “I loved the first movie, and the fact that they even wanted me to come in for a callback and then a camera read and then everything in between, I’m so lucky that I got this job,” she added. “I made some of my best friends on this job. I just absolutely adore this movie too, so I’m excited.”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters on March 17.

CHICAGO – (Satire News) – Taking a cue from some European countries, McDonalds will soon be adding unisex bathrooms.

Mickey D executives stated that by installing gender neutral bathrooms it will cut down from having to clean and maintain two bathrooms to just one, while providing a place to mix the sexes, and a place to mix the condiments!

Fast food restaurant experts say that nationwide the Golden Arches will be able to save over $43 million — a figure that is sure to rise with their new addition of McHabanero Jelly to go with their McBiscuits.

The franchise disclosed that they will also have special food trays installed in the gender neutral bathroom for those customers who prefer to eat their meals in the restroom, and giant straws for those who would rather slurp their shake from the comfort of the restroom.

New Zealand lawmakers banned from TikTok amid data use fears

    [ad_1]

New Zealand lawmakers and other workers inside the nation’s Parliament will be banned from having the TikTok app on their government phones

    ByNICK PERRY Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand lawmakers and other workers inside the nation’s Parliament will be banned from having the TikTok app on their government phones, officials said Friday.

The ban, which takes effect at the end of the month, follows similar moves in many other countries.

However, New Zealand’s ban will apply only to about 500 people in the parliamentary complex, not to all government workers like bans in the U.S. and Britain. Other New Zealand agencies could decide later to impose their own bans.

Global concern about the app comes after warnings by the FBI and other agencies that TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance could share TikTok user data — such as browsing history, location and biometric identifiers — with China’s authoritarian government.

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said he didn’t have TikTok on his phone.

“I’m not that hip and trendy,” he told reporters.

The New Zealand move came on the advice of government cybersecurity experts, said Parliamentary Service Chief Executive Rafael Gonzalez-Montero.

He said the app would be removed from all devices with access to the parliamentary network, although officials could make special arrangements for anybody who needed TikTok to perform their democratic duties.

“This decision has been made based on our own experts’ analysis and following discussion with our colleagues across government and internationally,” Gonzalez-Montero said in a statement. “Based on this information, the service has determined that the risks are not acceptable in the current New Zealand parliamentary environment.”

Hipkins said cybersecurity advice came from New Zealand’s intelligence agency, the Government Communications Security Bureau. He said New Zealand didn’t take a blanket approach to all government workers, and it would be up to each department or agency to make cybersecurity decisions.

GREG GUTFELD: Sunny Hostin’s ‘elite mentality’ reveals her disconnect from ordinary people

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

You know, I make fun of “The View” a lot, but that’s only because they keep talking. Those hands are always clucking.

They get to say stupid stuff for an hour every day, and then I get to say stupid stuff for an hour every day, except on purpose, but every now and then, one of those dingbats inadvertently says something that reveals modern liberal thoughts so perfectly, it deserves further study.

You know, like a weird serpent that washed up on the beach, and you want to poke it with a stick. Take the COVID lockdowns. Remember all the small businesses that went under? All the children scarred psychologically and emotionally because they couldn’t socialize with each other?

It broke up marriages and ruined what I had with Taylor Swift. Well, never mind all that stuff, because COVID also taught Sunny Hostin how to get her groceries delivered. Yeah, I know. Amazing, but that means it’s time for…

SINGERS: Living your life and you’re feeling low, you don’t know what is true. You don’t know what’s true. So you quick-flip through the channels to watch Sunny on “The View.” Oh, my God the stuff she says is dumb. Where the Hell did they get this woman from? She’s a host who’s always crass and lame. With lots of nonsense to proclaim. If you want a show where people know the host is stupider than you. Then set your DVR to watch Sunny Hostin on “The View.”

SUNNY HOSTIN ANGRILY DENOUNCES BILL MAHER’S CRITICISM OF WOKENESS: “HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED”

“The View” host Sunny Hostin said Twitter was a “hellscape” and that it didn’t matter if Trump returned.  (Screenshot/ABC/TheView)

Nicely done, Jean. You are hired for one more day. So, Sunny, I bet you haven’t been in a supermarket since COVID for about three years.

SUNNY HOSTIN: I haven’t been in a supermarket for about three years. That’s when I discovered Instacart, and I give them a big tip because they don’t always pay their people well. And that’s been an issue, I think, for the company. But man, you can get toiletries, you can get fire logs. You know, those big Bounty towels, you don’t want to carry them? Somebody else goes.

Fire logs? She had to tell the audience that she tips big because even she knows she sounds insufferable. Hey, I’m an ——-, but at least I tip. This dame probably virtue-signals on the toilet, but that’s not the point here. While everybody else was trying to figure out how to survive as the government told us, that breathing in public could kill us, Sunny was lolling around in her big house, clicking on pictures of arugula while mixing Cocoa Puffs into her Haagen-Dazs.

Oh, the oppression. I wonder if she wiped down the groceries herself or had her maid do it. She tips her too.

Sure, lots of people started getting their groceries delivered during COVID because we were told it would help save the world from the deadly virus that suddenly appeared for no apparent reason, leaked by no particular world government. We’re all in this together. We’re all in this together, remember? Just like Jonestown.

But unlike this chick, we didn’t think it was the best thing that could have happened to us, although it did get Joy Behar to wear a mask. Oh, you make me sick. It’s funny, her being named Joy is like me being named Ugly. But we didn’t breathe a sigh of relief that we’d never have to set foot in a grocery store again.

I love grocery stores. I treat them like strip clubs. I’ll spend hours in the cookie aisle staring at the Keebler elves until I’m aroused. Then I’ll stick a fiver in the bra of the old lady handing out free samples.

I’m only kicked out when security thinks my jean shorts are too small. They can never be too small, but most people went back to the grocery stores when the emergency was over. We went back to normal.

“THE VIEW” CO-HOST SUNNY HOSTIN LAMENTS “WHITE MEN” IN LATE NIGHT: “WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR WOMEN TO BREAK IN?”

Hosts of ABC's "The View" mocked former Trump officials who tried to reform themselves by going on the political talkshow.

True, I went back to not washing my hands and instead happily sneezing on the elderly. But if you work on “The View” or anywhere else in liberal media, you’re insulated from the world, just like blubber insulates them from the cold.

Oh, I give those poor people a big tip for scurrying around, gathering food for me and hauling it to my mansion. Yeah, thanks for the 20 bucks, lady. That’s good for two to three gallons of gas so I can get back home to my kids who are having baloney sandwiches for the ninth night in a row for dinner and urinal cakes for dessert.

You know, when the rest of us criticize the lockdowns, the lingering effects, people like Sunny just wave it away because it hasn’t affected them at all. For her, it was one giant excuse to sit at home and dip Eskimo Pies into alfredo sauce.

She doesn’t care because she doesn’t have to. It’s a class thing, and it’s why she plays the race card so often, so you don’t notice it’s a class thing. Her life stinks of classism.

Crime is on the rise? Just hire private security. Illegals are flooding into the country? Don’t live near the border. COVID? Just stay home forever. Let the peons take the risk for me. Schools suck? Hey, more idiots to watch “The View.”

This lady is more out-of-touch than Janet Yellen’s barber, and it is a barber. It’s the old Howard Stern rant: You idiots who need freedom are killing people. Why don’t you just sit at home like me in my Hamptons compound and work from home? Again, let the peons take all the risks.

My God, how the mighty fart man has fallen. These elites are so isolated, they’ve forgotten that most Americans don’t get paid to sit in a comfy chair pontificating about everything all day.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Nope. Some of us are cameramen whose names I don’t know. But maybe one day when we finally strip away this phony race war, it will finally expose this elite mentality and we’ll find out Sunny is just like Marie Antoinette, except she says, “Let me eat cake.”

  • Opinion | Britain’s National Health Service Is Exhausted

Opinion | Britain’s National Health Service Is Exhausted

    [ad_1]

On Dec. 15, nurses walked out and began the largest nurses’ strike in the history of Britain’s National Health Service. They were protesting working conditions that have left them burned out and stretched thin — and compromised patient safety — and wages that fell in the last decade in real terms. Ambulance workers joined them. This week, thousands of junior doctors went on strike for three consecutive days.

“I come to work and can see that there’s a patient waiting eight hours to see a doctor. There are some days where I finish my shift, come back the next day and then I see the same patient still sat waiting in A&E” — the emergency room — “the next day,” Dr. Kiara Vincent, one of the doctors striking, told the BBC on Monday.

But you don’t have to work in a hospital to know that Britain’s N.H.S. is in the most serious crisis of its history; you just have to be injured, or ill. Thousands of people are estimated to have died in the last year because of overwhelmed ambulance and emergency services. There are 7.2 million people in England, more than 10 percent of the population, on waiting lists for treatments like hip or knee replacements, back surgery or cataract operations. And hundreds of thousands of people have had a doctor’s referral for outpatient care at a hospital rejected because there are no available appointments — they are simply bounced back to the doctor to begin the process again.

That the flagship health care service of one of the wealthiest countries in the world is in such a state is shocking, but not without explanation. Decades of marketization, 10 years of Conservative austerity and a pandemic have hollowed out the N.H.S. so much that people who can afford to, and increasingly those who can’t, are having to pay for health care.

A two-tier system with more and more in common with American health care is taking shape. It’s not working, and we’ll soon be at the point where it’s too late to do anything about it.

The damage to the N.H.S. was inflicted in three main waves.

In the late 1980s and early ’90s, a Conservative government introduced the internal market and closed long-stay hospitals — where care was free — under the euphemistic banner of “care in the community.” Private nursing homes backed by equity investors took over provision for older people, and care became chargeable and means-tested, mirroring Medicaid “spend down” rules.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Labour, under Tony Blair, built dozens of new hospitals with money from partnerships with private investors. The new hospitals were saddled with enormous loan and interest repayments — around $60 billion is still owed.

In 2010, the Conservatives, back in power — alongside the Liberal Democrats until 2015 — embarked on a decade of austerity. A government-commissioned report released last year called the years between 2010 and 2020 the N.H.S.’s “decade of neglect.”

The cumulative effect was devastating: In the three decades that preceded the pandemic the number of NHS beds in England was more than halved. Shortages — of beds, ventilators or intensive care specialists — in early 2020 were not unique to Britain, but Britain had fewer per capita beds than comparable countries. There was a palpable sense of panic about how Britain and its health service were going to manage.

Britain did manage. And it was because of the dedication of the people who work for the N.H.S., and the retired staff who came out of retirement to help. Britons know this: Research from the spring of 2022 suggests that the British public still overwhelmingly support the founding principles of the N.H.S., even as their satisfaction with it sinks to the lowest level in decades. (Nurses and ambulance workers have the most public support of all of the workers who have been staging strikes in Britain this winter.)

But people are also tired of waiting — or not able to wait — and more and more are paying for private treatment.

There was a 35 percent increase in people choosing to self-fund care between 2019 and 2021, with “market-beating growth” reported in the self-pay market since the Covid pandemic. The number of people self-funding operations like hip and knee replacements more than doubled.

And there are indications that some of the people paying for private treatment are doing so not because they can afford to, but because they can’t afford to wait: Between 2019 and 2021, as self-funding increased, the number of people paying with private insurance decreased; people are reportedly taking out loans to pay for operations and, in a development that will be familiar to Americans but is something quite new in Britain, more and more people are turning to GoFundMe to raise money for medical treatment.

The government has done plenty to encourage this shift: In 2012, the Conservatives increased the cap on what percentage of an N.H.S. hospital’s income could come from treating private patients to 49 percent.

An investigation by The Guardian newspaper in January found that some N.H.S. hospitals with private divisions were promoting self-pay for people who “don’t want to wait for an N.H.S. referral,” while warning N.H.S. patients that services were “extremely busy.” And it’s well established that doctors who work for the public and the private sector have a conflict of interest and can game the system, telling patients that they’ll have to wait months for N.H.S. treatment one week and then treating them privately the next.

More private patients is supposed to mean more money for the service. But since the profit margins on the income from private patients are treated as confidential, researchers have not been able to verify whether private patient units have created more money for N.H.S. patients, whether they make any profit or even lose money.

What we do know is Britons who want to use the N.H.S. are finding it increasingly hard to do so. It doesn’t have to be this way, but change won’t be easy.

In the short term the N.H.S. should stop treating private patients and use public funds to increase the numbers of beds and staff. And sooner rather than later, doctors should be required to choose between working for the public system or the private sector.

There have been four attempts to introduce a bill — that we co-authored — that would reinstate the N.H.S. as a planned system of universal public health care in England in the House of Commons since 2015 — and all four have failed, the last one in 2018. The prospects of any future attempt would depend on the next government.

On Thursday, after months of rolling strikes, the government increased its pay offer to nurses and ambulance workers. Three of the largest health unions agreed to recommend the offer to their members. Junior doctors went back to work, but their dispute is far from over.

The N.H.S. as Britons have known it — accessible, free at the point of use, cherished — is becoming something else. But as long as there are still people willing to fight for it, it’s not too late to save it.

The uplifting quotes about life in this section seem to be a lot about being satisfied with yourself and what it takes to achieve success in the things you desire from life.

I am a firm believer that the best way to achieve this satisfaction with life, and eventually, the success you desire is by changing your habits.

Nothing is going to happen overnight, but changing your habits is a way to remake yourself as a slightly better version of yourself. Sort of like a YOU 1.1 then YOU 1.2 etc. Make enough changes over a long period of time, and you will be significantly improved.

There are two great ways of making these changes in your life.

    1. Habit Stacking

This is an idea I talk about in detail in my book Habit Stacking: 127 Small Changes to Improve Your Health, Wealth, and Happiness. But the concept is really simple, though I recommend reading the book to get the most from Habit Stacking, you do not need to read this book to use the concept to improve your life.

The concept is simple. Find one habit you already do every day. Then you stack habits you WANT to add into your daily routine onto that habit. All habits need to be short (5 minutes or less). I would not recommend stacking more than 2-3 habits at first.

For example, you brush your teeth every morning. But want to add some exercise and health into your daily routine. With habit stacking, you might make a habit to do 5 minutes of pushups IMMEDIATELY following your normal tooth maintenance. Then following your pushups, immediately make and drink a healthy smoothie.

    2. Start a Morning Routine

It is not a mistake that my habit stacking example above was part of a morning routine. This is where we can make the biggest positive impact on our lives. All you need to make a morning routine work is the willingness to wake up 20-40 minutes earlier.

Morning routines are hard to avoid. The day has not worn you down yet. In fact, a morning routine will actually give you energy for the day. IF you are up and ready, it is tough to put things off for later. Find out all about the benefits of morning routines and some examples in the post linked below.

    1. “In times of pain, when the future is too terrifying to contemplate and the past too painful to remember, I have learned to pay attention to right now. The precise moment I was in was always the only safe place for me.”

This uplifting quote makes me think about the importance of being self-aware. A lot of the pain in life comes from the constant rush of jumping from task-to-task-to-task. It may often seem like there is never a moment to rest, just constant stress from unending goals and deadlines.

This makes the moments taken for mindful living that much more important. Taking time out of a busy schedule and paying attention to the now is an important break that can give you time to revitalize, focus, and THEN attack the day again with renewed vigor and energy.

Entrepreneurs may certainly need some of these uplifting quotes. By definition, being an entrepreneur means creating opportunity where none was before.

Entrepreneurs are trailblazers, and sometimes trailblazers get killed and eaten by Indians.

  • Your Friday Briefing

    Your Friday Briefing

    [ad_1]

Eleven U.S. banks came together yesterday to inject $30 billion into First Republic Bank, a smaller peer on the brink of collapse after the implosion of Silicon Valley Bank last week. The arrangement, in which each will deposit at least $1 billion into First Republic, is meant as a show of support and a signal that the San Francisco lender’s woes do not reflect deeper trouble.

The arrangement was without precedent in decades, and an indication of how dire the banking sector’s predicament had become within a week. With their echoes of the 2008 financial crisis, the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank on Friday and Signature Bank on Sunday set off a panic that appears unlikely to subside immediately.

Shares of First Republic, which had lost three-quarters of their value in recent days, rallied on the announcement. But numerous other bank stocks continued to be pummeled. The banking sector has also been under pressure as a result of trouble at Credit Suisse, which was fighting for its life before Switzerland’s central bank stepped in to provide a backstop.

Details: Four of the country’s biggest banks — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo — agreed to contribute $5 billion each. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley will contribute $2.5 billion each.

Europe: The European Central Bank raised interest rates by half a percentage point to 3 percent, the highest since October 2008, sticking to its inflation-fighting plan.

Emmanuel Macron, the French president, opted to push through legislation to raise the retirement age to 64 from 62 without a full parliamentary vote, a decision certain to inflame an already tense confrontation over the measure. Opponents across the political spectrum burst into rounds of the “Marseillaise” and pounded on their desks in response.

For some, Macron’s decision smacks of the kind of contempt and aloofness of which he has sometimes been accused. During his second term, he has tried hard to project a milder image — more ready to listen and less inclined to rule alone. But the confrontation over his pension plan has revealed a more isolated president, with fewer allies.

The decision to avoid a National Assembly vote, which will be regarded by Macron’s political opponents as antidemocratic even though it is legal, came after two months of major demonstrations and intermittent strikes. Millions of French people have said they see the changes as an assault on their way of life.

Background: The Senate, or upper house, approved the bill early Thursday. But disarray in the lower house occurred because Macron’s Renaissance party does not hold a parliamentary majority. Even the center-right Republicans, who once pushed for raising the retirement age to 65, were hesitant to support Macron as nationwide protests against the measure grew.

Andrzej Duda, the president of Poland, said that his country would transfer four Soviet-designed MiG fighters to Ukraine “literally in the next few days,” potentially pushing Western military aid to the embattled country over a significant threshold. The warplanes would be the first sent to Ukraine by a NATO country since Russia invaded last year.

Poland first pledged such fighters a year ago but has so far sent none. Officials had previously indicated that they would send warplanes to Ukraine only alongside other countries. It was not immediately clear which allies were ready to join or whether Poland was going it alone. And there was skepticism over whether Warsaw could move as quickly as it hoped.

Some of Ukraine’s allies have appeared far more reluctant when it comes to warplanes, and the U.S. has said that sending them is not currently on the table. The debate over fighter jets came as Russian and Ukrainian troops in the eastern part of the country remained enmeshed in battle around Bakhmut, where both sides have sustained heavy losses.

Especially in the U.S., St. Patrick’s Day has often been associated with drinking. This year, more demand for sober revelry has led some bars and restaurants to offer teetotaling alternatives to the festivities, as well as a greater focus on Irish food and music.

More alcohol-free products, including Guinness 0, an alcohol-free version of the stout, have helped bar owners in New York City get creative. (Samples of the Guinness drink will be distributed on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange this afternoon after the ringing of the closing bell.)

New Zealand joins US push to curb TikTok use on official phones with parliament ban | CNN Business

    [ad_1]

    Hong Kong
    CNN
     —

New Zealand will ban TikTok on all devices with access to its parliament by the end of this month, becoming the latest country to impose an official bar on the popular social media platform owned by a Beijing-based tech conglomerate.

Led by the United States, a growing number of Western nations are imposing restrictions on the use of TikTok on government devices citing national security concerns.

Rafael Gonzalez-Montero, chief executive of New Zealand’s parliamentary service, said in a Friday statement that the risks of keeping the video-sharing app “are not acceptable.”

“This decision has been made based on our own experts’ analysis and following discussion with our colleagues across government and internationally,” he wrote.

“On advice from our cyber security experts, Parliamentary Service has informed members and staff the app TikTok will be removed from all devices with access to the parliamentary network,” he added.

But those who need the app to “perform their democratic duties” may be granted an exception, he said.

CNN has reached out to TikTok and its Beijing-based owner ByteDance for comment.

In an email to members of parliament seen by CNN, Gonzalez-Montero told lawmakers that the app would be removed from their corporate devices on March 31, after which they would not be able to re-download it.

He also instructed legislators to uninstall the app from their private devices adding that failure to comply may render them unable to access the parliamentary network.

New Zealand lawmaker Simon O’Connor, who is also a co-chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), told CNN that he welcomed the decision, calling it “a good one”.

“I – and IPAC as a whole – have had serious concerns about data privacy for some time,” he said, adding that TikTok’s replies to his previous enquiries about data security had been “unsatisfactory”.

IPAC is a cross-border group formed by legislators from democratic countries that is focused on relations with China and is often critical of Beijing’s leaders.

New Zealand’s decision came on the heels of similar actions already taken by its Western allies, despite the country’s track record of a more cautious approach when it comes to dealing with Beijing, in part because China is such a significant trade partner.

The United States, UK and Canada have ordered the removal of the app from all government phones, citing cybersecurity concerns.

All three countries are part of the the so-called “Five Eyes” alliance that cooperates with each other on intelligence gathering and sharing. Australia and New Zealand make up the five.

The Chinese video-sharing app is also barred in all three of the European Union’s main government institutions.

Tik Tok has become one of the world’s most successful social media platforms and is hugely popular among younger people.

The short video sharing app has more than 100 million users in the United States alone.

New Zealand’s latest move came just hours after TikTok acknowledged that the Biden administration had threatened to ban its operation nationwide unless its Chinese owners agreed to spin off their share of the social media platform.

US officials have raised fears that the Chinese government could use its national security laws to pressure TikTok or its parent company ByteDance into handing over the personal information of TikTok’s US users, which might then benefit Chinese intelligence activities or influence campaigns.

China has accused the United States of “unreasonably suppressing” TikTok and spreading “false information” about data security.

FBI Director Christopher Wray told the US Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this month that he feared the Chinese government could use TikTok to sway public opinion in the event that China invaded Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing claims sovereignty over despite never having ruled it.

TikTok has repeatedly denied posing any sort of security risk and has said it is willing to work with regulators to address any concerns they might have.

Dollar General Announces Plan to Spend More on Staff, Stores | Entrepreneur

    [ad_1]

Popular discount store Dollar General has recently gained more customers from higher-income homes as people try to save money while facing looming inflation. The chain is known for its low prices and it believes bargains will be even more important for shoppers in the coming year. For Dollar General, that will also mean spending more on boosting inventory and adding staff as it works to gain additional market shares—up to $100 million more.

As Yahoo Finance reports, many people, even those with middle and upper incomes, had to change how they shop in 2022 because of higher food prices. In a call with analysts, Dollar General CEO Jeff Owen reportedly said, “Customers and income brackets above our core customers [are] shopping with us at an increasing rate.”

Instead of buying as much as they used to, customers now purchase fewer items and depend more on savings, credit cards, or borrowing money. This has prompted Dollar General to work toward improving its supply of frozen and refrigerated products to keep up with demand. The company invested in 12 facilities for this purpose and plans to expand offerings to over 5,000 stores by 2023.

The Wall Street Journal reports that although Dollar General’s sales grew by 5.7%, growth was slightly less than predicted. Its earnings per share were also low, at $2.96. Despite these challenges, the company plans to invest $100 million this year to make stores even better for bargain hunters. It hopes this will attract more customers and improve the shopping experience.

Even as Americans struggle with economic problems and cut back on expenses, Dollar General and other discount stores like Dollar Tree expect their sales to grow as more people look for ways to save money on everyday items.

  • Taylor Swift’s ‘All of the Girls You Loved Before’ Lyrics Seem to Address Joe Alwyn’s Romantic Past

Taylor Swift’s ‘All of the Girls You Loved Before’ Lyrics Seem to Address Joe Alwyn’s Romantic Past

    [ad_1]

Taylor Swift delivered four gifts to fans on the eve of her first show on The Eras tour, dropping four new songs: three Taylor’s Versions of previously released tracks and a never-before-heard one, “All of the Girls You Loved Before,” a vault track from her Lover album.

The title seems to be a riff off of the famous YA book and Netflix film series To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before; the screen adaptation first came out in 2018 when Swift was making Lover.

And lyrically, it seems to be Swift’s musing on a romantic partner’s past, seemingly boyfriend Joe Alwyn’s, before her and her thanking her predecessors for making her partner the man he is now.

Swift’s lyrics, such as “Every woman that you knew brought you here / I wanna teach you how forever feels like” and “All of the girls you’ve loved before (Ooh) / Made you the one I’ve fallen for / Every dead-end street led you straight to me,” denote how serious she is about him and how she sees their love as serious, endgame, and fated.

    Instagram

Many love songs on Lover were actually about Swift’s current boyfriend Alwyn, whom she has dated since fall 2016. The album even sparked fan speculation that they may have secretly gotten married. Of course, in the years since, neither Swift nor Alwyn have even confirmed this or even the other rumor they’re secretly engaged. Alwyn told WSJ magazine last April of engagement talk, “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins. I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”

Still, back when Lover was released in August 2019, Alwyn and Swift were about three years into their romance and were seriously dating. Another love song exploring their relationship and the history leading up to them finding each other doesn’t seem out of place at all—especially one with lyrics that reference other Swift songs about Alwyn.

Here, the lyrics via Genius to take in and dissect, with some notes on references. You can listen to the track below:

This content is imported from youTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

All Of The Girls You Loved Before

    Watch on

    This is an image

When you think of all the late nights
    Late fights over the phone
    Wake up in the mornin’
    With someone, but feeling alone

    Pre-Chorus

A heart is drawn ’round your name
    In someone’s handwriting, not mine
    We’re sneakin’ out into town
    Holdin’ hands, just killing time
Your past and mine are parallel lines
    Stars all aligned, they intertwined
And taught you the way you call me “baby”
Treat me like a lady, all that I can say is

It’s worth noting that in 2018, E! reported how Swift and Alwyn literally snuck around the U.K. to keep their privacy while dating (“we’re sneakin’ out into town / holdin’ hands”), and The Sun reported they wore disguises while out. “Unless you’re part of her inner circle, you wouldn’t know when she is or isn’t here,” a source told E!. “[Taylor] barely leaves a trace.” Lyrically, Genius users noted that Swift had similar lines about stars being aligned in Midnights‘ “Mastermind” (also believed to be abut Alwyn; “Once upon a time, the planets and the fates / And all the stars aligned / You and I ended up in the same room / At the same time) and their paths and past aligning in folklore’s “Invisible String” (“And isn’t it just so pretty to think / All along there was some / Invisible string / Tying you to me?”)

    Chorus
All of the girls you’ve loved before (Ooh)
Made you the one I’ve fallen for
Every dead-end street led you straight to me
Now, you’re all I need, I’m so thankful for
All of the girls you’ve loved before
    And I love you more

    Verse 2

When I think of all the makeup
Fake love out on the town (Ooh)
Cryin’ in the bathroom for some dude
Whose name I cannot remember now

Fans on Genius suggested this “dude” was likely Jake Gyllenhaal, as Swift sang about crying in the bathroom in two Red songs seemingly about him, “The Moment I Knew” (“And there in the bathroom / I try not to fall apart / And the sinking feeling starts / As I say hopelessly / “He said he’d be here”) and “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” (“Not weeping in a party bathroom / Some actress asking me what happened, you, that’s what happened, you.”)

    Pre-Chorus
    Secret jokes all alone
No one’s home, sixteen and wild (Ooh)
    We’re breakin’ up, makin’ up
    Leave without saying goodbye (Ooh)
Just know that it’s everything that made me
Now, I call you “baby,” that’s why you’re so amazing

    Chorus

All of the girls you’ve loved before (Ooh)
Made you the one I’ve fallen for
Every dead-end street led you straight to me
Now, you’re all I need, I’m so thankful for
All of the girls you’ve loved before
    And I love you more

    Bridge
Your mother brought you up loyal and kind
Teenage love taught you there’s good in goodbye
Every woman that you knew brought you here
I wanna teach you how forever feels like

    Chorus
The girls you’ve loved before (Ooh)
Made you the one I’ve fallen for
Every dead-end street (Every dead-end street) led you straight to me (Straight to me)
Now, you’re all I need (All I need), I’m so thankful for
All of the girls you’ve loved before
    But I love you more

  • Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear Signs AGA Heralded Gray Games Ban Bill Into Law

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear Signs AGA Heralded Gray Games Ban Bill Into Law

    [ad_1]

    Posted on: March 16, 2023, 11:31h.

    Last updated on: March 16, 2023, 11:31h.

Last week, a bill to ban gray, or skill, games in Kentucky seemed in peril. On Thursday, it became law.

    KY MAC
Members of the Kentucky Merchants and Amusement Coalition await the start of the March 2 Kentucky House Licensing, Occupations, and Administrative Regulations Committee hearing to discuss House Bill 594, a bill to ban so-called gray games or skill games that members have in their establishments. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed HB 594 into law on Thursday. (Image: Casino.org)

During his weekly press conference, Gov. Andy Beshear (D) told reporters that he signed House Bill 594. Sponsored by state Rep. Killian Timoney, R-Nicholasville, the legislation prohibits establishments from hosting the gaming machines that have popped up statewide in recent years. Those who violate the law face fines of up to $25,000 per device, and that includes anyone who owns, operates, finances, supervises, or manages a machine.

The machines have been the subject of a stirring debate in the state for the last couple of years. Kentucky’s horse racing interests and charitable organizations called for the ban, saying the machines they call gray games represent illegal gambling in a state that allows parimutuel horse racing, historical horse racing, a state lottery, and charitable gaming.

On the other side are the game manufacturers, distributors, and businesses and organizations that host the machines. They claim the games are legal and do not violate state law, with companies like Pace-O-Matic and Prominent Technologies seeking permission from county authorities before working with convenience stores, restaurants, and other establishments. They call them skill games because a player can use their memory and hand-eye coordination to win each time they play.

Representatives from veterans’ fraternal organizations said the machines have eaten away at their gaming operations, which has reduced their capabilities to contribute to civic causes. Businesses that host the games say they are a vital source of revenue and helped many of them stay afloat during the pandemic.

Beshear Doesn’t Believe Games Are Legal

Beshear told reporters that he considers himself a “pro gaming governor,” but that comes with ensuring that the state regulates legal offerings.

While he supports the sports betting bill that’s currently in the Senate and said, “it’s time we have full-blown casino gaming,” the governor could not extend that support to the machines he described as gray games.

They’re entirely unregulated,” Beshear said. “I don’t believe that they were legal, yet they came into Kentucky and just set up and were taking dollars from Kentuckians and taking them out of State with zero regulation, zero taxation, zero system to help those that might develop any issues from using them for gambling.”

With Beshear signing the bill into law, it means the machines will officially become illegal and must be removed from establishments when the law officially takes effect 90 days after the General Assembly session wraps up.

The final day of the session is March 30.

In a statement, Wes Jackson, president of the pro-skill games Kentucky Merchants and Amusement Coalition (KY MAC), called out HB 594 as “anti-free market, anti-small business, and anti-Kentuckian.” He added the group, which represents hundreds of game-hosting establishments from across the state, is continuing to review its options.

AGA Sees Kentucky Law as ‘Springboard’

Passage of HB 594 caught the attention of the American Gaming Association (AGA), which has been calling on states and the federal government to take action against illegal gaming operators. According to the association, Americans bet more than a half-trillion dollars in the illegal market, and that includes the gray machines.

In a letter to members Thursday afternoon, AGA President and CEO Bill Miller praised Kentucky for being the first state to enact a standalone law banning unregulated gaming machines.

“This win is a testament to what we can accomplish when we unite as an industry behind a common cause—and the American Gaming Association will use it as a springboard to pursue similar success in states throughout the country,” Miller wrote.

    Back from the Brink

Two weeks ago Friday, HB 594 faced an uncertain fate after a plurality of lawmakers voted to table the bill. That charge was led by state Rep. Steven Doan, R-Erlanger, who sponsored House Bill 525 to create a state gaming commission to regulate and tax the machines. That bill has not received a committee meeting.

On March 9, House leaders succeeded in reviving the bill and getting out of the chamber by a 64-32 vote. On Tuesday, the Senate Licensing and Occupations Committee approved the bill, with the full Senate passing it later that same day, 29-6.

KY MAC’s Jackson called out lawmakers who voted for the ban.

“Those who backed this ban love to say they passed it because skill games need to be regulated, yet at the same time wouldn’t even give our regulation bill a hearing,” he said.

Tucker Carlson Swiftly Fact-Checks Himself Following Fox News Fumble

    [ad_1]

Fox News host Tucker Carlson owned up to an on-air “mistake” after he falsely claimed that a 2017 clip of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was from 2007 ― a year before the 2008 financial crisis.

Carlson, who gave a subtle nod to the recent Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failures, pointed to Yellen’s remarks Thursday that she didn’t believe “deficit spending” was a main cause of high inflation rates, and then he went after her 2021 statement that inflation would be transitory.

“So she was wrong, but she’s lying about it. This is not the first time she’s been wrong, by the way. Here she was in 2007, one year before the Great Recession,” said Carlson before he flipped to a clip that a Fox News graphic itself showed was from 2017.

Carlson earlier in the program said news organizations exist for people “to assess whether things are true or not,” and he made an assessment for his viewers after his show aired the 2017 clip.

“Our mistake. That was 2017. Clearly she didn’t see this crisis coming,” said Carlson as he corrected himself.
