OpenAI, the generative artificial intelligence startup backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), has signed separate licensing and products deals with news publishers The Atlantic and Vox Media.
As part of the deal with The Atlantic, OpenAI will license its content to train its AI models. It will also see The Atlantic’s articles be discoverable on ChatGPT. Both parties are also collaborating on product and technology, with The Atlantic working on an experimental microsite known as Atlantic Labs in an effort to use AI to develop new products and features.
“We believe that people searching with AI models will be one of the fundamental ways that people navigate the web in the future,” The Atlantic’s CEO Nicholas Thompson said in a statement. “We’re delighted to partner with OpenAI, to make The Atlantic’s reporting and stories more discoverable to their millions of users, and to have a voice in shaping how news is surfaced on their platforms.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Vox, which owns a number of publications, including The Verge, Easter and SB Nation, is also signing a deal with OpenAI, the company said.
As part of the deal with Vox, OpenAI will provide its tech for Vox’s Forte first-party data platform to enhance its advertising and targeting capabilities, Axios reported. It will also use OpenAI’s tech for content discovery and recommendations on its websites.
Terms of OpenAI’s deal with Vox were also not disclosed.
OpenAI has signed several deals with media publishers in recent months, including the Financial Times, French newspaper Le Monde and Spanish media conglomerate Prisa Media, News Corp. (NWSA) and others.
It also has existing deals with the Associated Press, the American Journalism Project and NYU.
The New York Times Company (NYT) sued Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright infringement in December 2023, alleging the tech companies illegally used the newspaper’s content to train artificial intelligence models.
A group of 11 nonfiction writers recently joined a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court that alleged OpenAI and Microsoft misused their books to train the companies’ AI models.
OpenAI was sued in a New York federal court in September 2023 by a number of authors, including George R.R. Martin and John Grisham, over alleged copyright infringement.
