A house fire in Arden Arcade killed one person and sent another to the hospital. Fire officials say a working smoke alarm helped one resident escape.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A house fire in the Arden Arcade area left one person dead and another hospitalized late Tuesday, according to fire officials.

Crews were dispatched to a residential home after reports of a structure fire. Investigators say a functioning smoke alarm warned at least one occupant, allowing that person to escape before conditions worsened. That individual was later treated for smoke inhalation.

Another person inside the home was unable to make it out and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim is not yet known.

Fire officials are working to determine what sparked the blaze. The incident remains under investigation, and no additional details were immediately available.
