One dead, one hospitalized in head-on motorcycle crash in Sonoma County

(KRON) — A motorcyclist was killed and the driver of a minivan was airlifted to the hospital with major injuries following a head-on, three-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in rural Sonoma County Sunday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the motorcyclist was driving south on Highway 1, north of Valley Ford Road around 2 p.m., when they crossed over the double-yellow lines in an attempt to pass slower drivers. The motorcycle entered the northbound lane and crashed head-on into the oncoming van.

“The impact caused the male rider to be ejected from the motorcycle, after which the rider was struck by another vehicle,” CHP said. “The motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

At the hospital, CHP officers arrested the driver of the minivan for suspicion of driving under the influence. It is unclear at this time if the motorcyclist was also driving under the influence.
