Students at two Oklahoma high schools walked out of class Friday afternoon to protest the state’s anti-transgender laws.

“Youth who are transgender in Oklahoma schools now face mandated discipline, possibly even suspension, simply for using the restroom and other facilities at school corresponding with who they are,” protesters said on social media, urging fellow students to “spread the word.”

Students at Norman North and Norman High were joined by their parents, former students and community members to protest Oklahoma’s Senate Bill 625 — which was signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt in May and bans trans kids from using bathrooms and changing rooms that are consistent with their gender.

“It feels like people’s rights are actively being stripped away after we were making so much progress. It’s like really heartbreaking to watch it all go away,” Emery Jenkins, a sophomore at Norman North, told local television station KOCO-TV.

Jenkins, who’s trans, told the OU Daily that she’s facing in-school suspension for using women’s facilities at her school.

On Wednesday she was suspended for the third time this semester after she was reportedly found in the women’s bathroom fixing her makeup.

“It feels like a birthright. I am a woman, therefore, I use the women’s restroom,” Jenkins told the outlet. “It’s unfair of them to take that away from me. I shouldn’t have to leave for a select few who are uncomfortable.”

“I’m tired of it. Everyone I know is tired of it,” said fellow protester Darcy Spivey, a junior student at Norman North.

Earlier this month, Gov. Stitt, a Republican, signed into law a bill prohibiting federal funding to be used on gender-affirming care for trans youth. In March — a day before Transgender Visibility Day — he signed into law a bill banning trans girls and women from competing in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
