NYPD security increased at synagogues for Yom Kippur; monitoring Manchester attack near synagogue

NEW YORK (WABC) — The NYPD says that it is monitoring the deadly stabbing and car ramming attack that happened in Manchester, England, and there is no known connection to the city.

The attack happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

The NYPD added that they already had enhanced coverage and high visibility patrols in place at synagogues in New York City due to the holiday.

Meantime, former governor and mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo released a statement condemning the attack.

He said in part, “Those who attack Jews, those who harass or intimidate Jews, those who stand alongside the hatemongers who shout ‘globalize the intifada’ – they must all be condemned. We must send one unified message: Not in New York City, not now, not ever. In light of this horrific attack, I urge the NYPD to take additional precautions outside of houses of worship to ensure those participating in services are safe and can worship in peace.”
