Richard Moll, the 6-foot-8 actor best known for playing Bull the Bailiff on the NBC sitcom “Night Court” from 1984 to 1992, has died, a spokesperson for the family said. He was 80 years old.
Moll died peacefully on Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, Calif., according to Jeff Sanderson, a publicist at Chasen & Company.
The deep-voiced, towering actor was born in Pasadena, Calif. In 1943 and attended the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career doing commercial work for brands such as Pepsi and Jack in the Box, as well acting in TV movies, according to his bio on the Turner Classic Movies website.
Among his early credits are the role of the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, Joseph Smith, in the 1977 film “Brigham,” and a small role in the 1979 made-for-TV movie “The Jericho Mile.”
But it wasn’t until 1984 that Moll established himself as a fan favorite, playing one of the more popular characters on “Night Court,” the imposing yet lovable court guard Bull Shannon, alongside Harry Anderson and John Larroquette.
In 1985, Moll was nominated for a Saturn award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in “House,” a horror-comedy movie directed by Steve Miner.
In 1999, he was cast as a gay man in the cult classic “But I’m a Cheerleader,” working alongside Natasha Lyonne, Wesley Mann, Michelle Williams and RuPaul.
Throughout his career, Moll also did extensive work as a voice actor for video games and animation, including the voice of Two-Face on “The Adventures of Batman & Robin,” and Scorpion on “Spider-Man: The Animated Series.”
Moll is survived by his children, Chloe and Mason Moll; his ex-wife, Susan Moll; and his stepchildren, Cassandra Card and Morgan Ostling.
