New Yorkers are no nonsense, practical bunch who usually shoot from the hip. We knew when we asked them what their hopes are for the city in 2023 that they would not hold back.

Here’s what they had to say:

“More community, more looking out for our neighbors, a reinvigoration of kindness, and a couple less rats. There are resources that need to be addressed more urgently— transit, education, housing.”

Margot Hanzel, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn

****

“I’d like to see more affordable housing here — it’s just as expensive as Midtown Manhattan.”

To Mayor Adams, she wants “less nepotism in his administration.”

Simona McCray, a Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

****

“Really, the subway they can clean up. They need to figure out a situation to help homeless people. Find them temporary housing.”

Cyndy Starer, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

****

“A better practice of ethics across the board. There’s too many places not being lived in because they’re too expensive. [ And ] “fix the BQE faster!”

Judith Borosin, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn

****

“Eliminate the bike lanes.”

Carlos Arroyo, Upper West Side, Manhattan

****

“I want the mayor to get rid of the rats. He talks about it but he doesn’t do anything about it.”

Ira Dworkowitz, Manhattan

****

“Do something about crime. It’s unsafe.”

Raymond Francis, Upper West Side, Manhattan

****

“I would tell Mayor Adams straight to his face to get the police to work harder or get more of them on the job. We need to bring back stop and frisk in the new year.”

Yaovi Acolitze, Manhattan

Dinah Balthazar tears up things she wants to leave behind during "Good Riddance Day" event in Times Square on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022.
