As conservatives continued to spread misinformation about the Friday morning attack on Paul Pelosi, federal authorities on Monday filed charges of attempted kidnapping and assault against the alleged assailant, David DePape. They also revealed further terrifying details about the incident.

According to the criminal complaint, shortly after arriving at the Pelosi’s home, officers with the San Francisco Police Department witnessed DePape strike Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer, after which the House Speaker’s husband fell to the ground and “appeared to be unconscious.” When law enforcement searched DePape’s backpack they found, “among other things, a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal.” The police also “recovered zip ties in Pelosi’s bedroom and in the hallway near the front door of the Pelosi residence.”

During an interview with an officer, in an ambulance taking him to San Francisco General Hospital, Paul Pelosi said he was sleeping when Depape showed up in his bedroom announcing that he wanted to talk to “Nancy.” Told Nancy Pelosi was not there, and would not be home for several days, DePape said he would wait.

In a recorded interview, having been read his Miranda rights, DePape told San Francisco Police Department officers that he’d planned to hold the House Speaker hostage and talk with her, and that if she told him the “truth,” he would let her go, and if she “lied” to him, he would break “her kneecaps,” apparently adding that he was certain she would not tell the truth. During the interview, DePape said he viewed Pelosi as as the “leader of the pack” of lies told by Democrats, and explained that he wanted to break her kneecaps because she would have to be wheeled into Congress, which would send a message to other lawmakers that there are consequences for their actions. According to the filing, DePape “also explained generally that he wanted to use Nancy to lure another individual” to him. In the same interview, DePape admitted to breaking into the Pelosi home through a glass door, using a hammer. He also said that after waking Paul Pelosi up, he started to take out twist ties from his pocket to restrain the Speaker’s husband; that he didn’t leave the home after Pelosi called 911 because, like the founding fathers with the British, he was fighting tyranny with no option to surrender; and that Paul Pelosi was “taking the punishment instead” when he struck the Speaker’s husband in the head after the police arrived.

In addition to spreading misinformation about the assault and blaming Democrats for it, Republicans have spent the last several days airing new political attacks on the House Speaker, demanding she be fired, and telling jokes about her husband being knocked unconscious.
