KING, N.C. (WGHP) — A King Elementary School employee has been charged after a block referencing the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was found on the school’s campus and sparked a shelter-in-place order, according to the King Police Department.
On Monday, Sept. 15, a King School Resource Officer was told that there was a wooden block on the school campus with the words “Sandy Hook Elementary” and “Shooter’s Accomplice Block” written on its sides.
The SRO informed King Elementary School administrators, and the school went into shelter-in-place protocol. After investigating, officers determined that there was no active threat to students and staff.
Police say the block was occasionally used by school staff to prop open an exterior door, despite policies against leaving doors propped open.
A bus driver at King Elementary School reportedly found the block and wrote the message as a commentary against propping exterior school doors open, according to police.
The employee was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct by disrupting the teaching of students at a public educational institution.
