The Navy Yard Station is getting some upgrades to its escalators. Here’s what that may mean for daily commutes.
WASHINGTON — The Half Street entrance to Navy Yard’s Metro station will close for several months to allow for repair work to be done. The good news is, the closure won’t start until after the Nationals end their season.
Starting Sept. 29, Navy Yard’s west entrance will be closed until March 2026 for the installation of new escalators. This means that the west entrance elevator will also be unavailable. The east entrance elevator on New Jersey Ave. SE will be open during the upgrades.
Navy Yard is the closest Metro station to Nats Park and Audi Field, which is why the repairs aren’t scheduled to happen until after the baseball season ends. The entrance is expected to reopen in time for next season, with the first home game slated for April 3, 2026.
Crews are expected to replace two mezzanine escalators and the three west entrance escalators simultaneously. Metro’s escalators are custom built to fit each location along the stops and different lines. Commuters will notice heavy equipment and cranes that are needed to remove the old infrastructure and bring in new parts.
“Navy Yard is one of our busiest stations during baseball season, with escalators moving thousands of fans over a short period of time,” said Metro Executive Vice President and Chief Infrastructure Officer Theresa Impastato. “By closing the Half Street entrance and replacing all the escalators at once, we can finish the work faster, minimize strain on the remaining equipment, and offer a better experience for our customers.”
In September, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority replaced 122 out of 145 escalators as part of a multi-year project. Escalators at Dupont Circle’s south entrance, Vienna, L’Enfant Plaza’s east entrance, Franconia-Springfield, Pentagon, Medical Center, Crystal City, and Navy Yard east entrance have been replaced so far.
Other stations that are scheduled for escalator replacement in 2025 include Rosslyn, Gallery Place, L’Enfant Plaza west entrance, and Foggy Bottom.
