Much colder fall weather moves into western Massachusetts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Freeze Warning is in effect for most of western Massachusetts Thursday night into Friday morning as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.

Earlier this week, temperatures reached the 80s, but now they have fallen to the 50s and 60s, marking a significant shift to cooler autumn weather.

Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis noted that this will be the first hard freeze of the season, likely ending the growing season for most of western Massachusetts.

“I love it when it’s a little crisp and cool,” said Ray Zanetti from Granby, CT. “It’s nice and clear, good breathing weather.”

The Freeze Warning does not include Franklin and western Hampshire Counties, as the National Weather Service considers the growing season already over in those areas.

The average high temperature for this time of year at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee is around 65 degrees, with the average low around 45 degrees.

At Forest Park in Springfield, some people were seen wearing winter coats, hats, and gloves as they prepared for the cold snap.

Chris Bouzakis explained that temperatures could fall into the 20s in some towns, which will officially end the growing season.

Residents are advised to cover or bring inside any plants they wish to preserve from the freezing temperatures.

As temperatures drop, residents of western Massachusetts are preparing for the first hard freeze of the season, signaling the end of the growing season for many areas.
