Terry L. Bennett is the MPD officer hit by a driver on I-695, his wife confirmed to WUSA9. He had been helping a car broken down on the highway when he was hit.
WASHINGTON — DC Police Officer Terry L. Bennett is in critical condition on Christmas Day, two days after he was hit by a driver on I-695, his wife said, confirming his identity to WUSA9.
“There are no updates at this time,” Bennett’s wife, Nadia, told WUSA9’s Alexis Wainwright. “He is still in critical condition.”
The Metropolitan Police Department has not confirmed Bennett’s identity but told WUSA9 that one of their officers had been hit by a driver on Tuesday night while helping the driver of a broken-down car on I-695, near South Capitol Street, at around 10:10 p.m.
The driver who hit the officer was also taken to the hospital and treated for what officers described as “non-life-threatening injuries,” staying at the scene after hitting the officer.
The driver of the broken-down car was not hurt in the crash, police said.
The MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit has been handling the investigation into the crash.
